Well, an improvement over last years effort is about all you can say, unless there is a spectacular form reversal in the last 15 minutes.

Continued the worrying form from last week (I know we won but Richmond had more good signs last week than we did).
ABout the only positives were Rowe and Rhyce Shaw.

Collingwood vs West Coast - Pies Overwhelmed
News
27 Feb 2005
http://www.magpies.net/nick/article/art ... om=&ucat=1&
In what is a disappointing display, Collingwood struggled in the wet yet humid conditions at Marrara Oval, Darwin, to lose at the hands of West Coast to the tune of 51 points. After Rocca snared an early goal, it was all West Coast, as they scooted to a 35 point half time lead. Former Eagle Chad Morrison has put in a hearterning performance against his old side, while youngster Julian Rowe has toiled hard against the tide. The much maligned Rhyce Shaw was once again assigned the task of minding the 2004 Brownlow Medalist, and did a solid job of it.

Not too concerned with the result. Too many kids in postions that required experience.

On the positive:

The three pillars in the backline have looked very solid. Most damage has been done by opposition midfielders - not key forwards.

Maxwell read the ball well all night. Good follow up to a positive 2004 season.

Rowe looks like he has improved. Showed very good balance, sideward movement and foot skill.

Had more clearances at 3qtr time. Broke down across HF for obvious reasons.

Fraser looking sharp.

Lica is looking like he might be in 2002 form.

Shaw showing he may be our go-to tagger for quick opposition midfielders. Brodie Holland not able to maintain pace after initial acceleration.

Rocca's 3 goals in shocking conditions for a big man - impressive.

Fanning showed he can ruck - despite some stuff ups.

Negatives -

Leon Davis not putting in the effort required of a midfield position. Either not fit or not interested. Failed to chase and apply pressure. Hopefully applies himself better when its the 'real deal'.

On first impressions Eagn struck me as a sloppy footballer. Reminds me of Leon Davis. Leonard had 5-10 mins on the ground and showed far more enthusiasm in his attack on the man/ball.

West Coast wins through

West Coast has booked a semi-final berth against the Kangaroos in the Wizard Home Loans Cup after it easily accounted for Collingwood by 51 points in steamy conditions at Marrara Oval in Darwin on Saturday night.

The Eagles 1.14.13 (106) defeated the Magpies 1.7.4 (55) to book just their fifth semi-final appearance since they joined the pre-season/night series competition in 1987.

Incredibly, West Coast has never won a semi-final clash in this competition and along with home-rival Fremantle, is only the club in the AFL not to win a pre-season/night series title.

The win to WCE can be typified in a few words. They knew we would make mistakes and they made sure they capitalised. I believe they only kicked 2 goals from set shots. The rest of the goals came from us messing it up in the midfield or backline and WCE's kicking goals from our mistakes.

Good effort from some youngsters. I was impressed with Rowe and Shaw. Both had good games. You could see the heat and humidity getting to the boys. We could have got closer but our ball handling let us down. Was it just me or was Morrison hitting his old team mates with passes more than his new team mates??
Oh and lastly I thought Cheesy had a good game as well. Would like to see him hit 01,02 form again.
All this may be summed up in one word - CHARACTER - and if that is not worth developing, nothing is.

Poor David Fanning should be re-named 'Rubber Chest' :)

At times I thought we were playing tunnel ball.

Lonie kept going for the man instead of the football... even when the football was on its own. He looked dangerous though when he had the football and was running towards goal.

Rocca must have smelled because to frequently he was the only Collingwood player inside the 50m line.

Josh Fraser's posessions were 'pure gold'... lol

And our best midfielders i.e. Scott Burns and Woey were playing

I have not 'belly laughed' so much at a Collingwood game before... some of our disposals were hilarious... ahhh very funny in a depressing sort of way.

Chad Morrison played well I thought.

Overall though we had the familiar problem of not being able to score goals/lack of forward options. We really missed Tarrant tonight.

But also our best midfielders were either not on the park or out of position i.e. Ben Johnson didn't play, Scott Burns played on the wing, Woey played in defence.

Still makes a supporter very nervous about the rest of the season when you see a performance like that.

Ben :)

Sobering experience....
I just hope they keep playing lots of the kids from now on - they need to get as much seniors experience as possible so team can develop some depth in order to have any sort of tilt this season - it seems this game exposed a lack of depth (though I only heard it on radio so far) but hopefully the younguns can develop quickly - otherwise brace yourselves for a development year.
I spose a slight comfort was port also getting trounced - but that was mainly due to a last quarter fade-out so not nearly as bad as our all-game thrashing.

Also the team refused to get it in long and fast, or cover the rebound effectively (once on the rebound the gurls seemed to get it in with consumate ease) - hopefully that is the players making the coaches look bad and not the other way round.....

I can't see many positives coming out of that game, except that we seem to have found a niche for Rhyce and Rowe has stepped up from last year.

Rocca, Licca and Josh also played well.

Morrison got plenty of the ball. Is it me, or is his (ugly) kicking style similar to James Tird?

I'd like to think that the poor result was due to inexperience and conditions, although the Weagles handled it OK.

The biggest disappointment of the night was Leon Davis.....no magic there I'm afraid. Looks like it may be departure lounge time!

The only youngster who showed any promise last night was C3. The others were overawed but will be better off with the experience.

Eagles too fast for the Magpies
By Mark Duffield
Darwin
February 27, 2005
http://www.realfooty.theage.com.au/arti ... 73566.html
Collingwood's Wizard Cup campaign ground to a halt in Darwin last night, the undermanned Magpies crashing to a 51-point defeat against a fleet-footed West Coast.

Without Nathan Buckley, Blake Caracella, Alan Didak, Tarkyn Lockyer and Chris Tarrant, the Magpies were unable to match Eagle Andrew Embley's midfield run or Ashley Sampi's goalkicking instincts in a 1.14.13 (106) to 1.7.4 (55) win.

And Collingwood's run of pre-season injuries continued, with Cameron Cloke hurting a knee in the last quarter.

West Coast plays the Kangaroos in a semi-final at Subiaco on Friday night. It was a good night all round for the West Australian team, which rested captain Ben Cousins but welcomed back big man Michael Gardiner from a knee reconstruction.

Eagles beat Magpies in trying conditions

West Coast confirmed its standing as one of the AFL premiership fancies of 2005 with an impressive 51-point Wizard Cup quarter-final win over Collingwood in extreme weather conditions at Marrara Oval.

The Eagles ran the Magpies off the park in a first half played in hot, windy and humid conditions and then withstood a Collingwood fightback in the third-quarter rain to eventually win 1.14.13 (106) to 1.7.4 (55).
West Coast led all night and blew out the margin through five goals to three in the final term in a good tune-up before next week's semi at Subiaco.

The Eagles will now play the Kangaroos in one of next week's pre-season semi-finals, and how they respond after tonight's game - played in sapping humidity - will be another good test for John Worsfold's men.
