Grand Final - Sunday 19 September 2004

Post by Dale61 »

Reserves Grand Final

Time: 11.00am
Venue: Optus Oval, Melways Ref: Map 29 G12

Admission Prices:

The reserves side have advanced to the 2004 VFL Grand Final following a hard fought victory over North Ballarat.

The reserves got the jump in the first quarter, kicking the first 4 goals of the match. They maintained an advantage at half time before North Ballarat fought back and drew level with the towners at three-quarter time. Williamstown continued to attack in the last quarter, skipping out to a 25 point lead, which was eventually whittled down to 10 points at the final siren.

The win takes the reserves into their fourth Grand Final in a row. Having won the Grand Final in 2002 and 2003, the players know what is required of them to win a third straight premiership.

Team for Sunday:

B: Lee ~ Hall ~ Butler.
HB: Ralph ~ Lawry ~ McKenzie.
C: Pearce ~ Sheehan ~ Leonard.
HF: McArdle ~ Cape ~ Laverde.
F: Dukes ~ Uhi ~ Benson.
R: Fanning ~ Rippon ~ Ramsay.
Inter: Ashton ~ Chiu ~ Crawford ~ Hollow
Knight ~ Neeson ~ Palmer ~ Watts.

Grand Final Aftermatch
Win, lose or draw, supporters are invited to the post Grand Final celebrations at the Exit Inn.

The Williamstown playing group will be in attendance, including the 22 players who take the field on Sunday. It will be a chance to celebrate the magnificent achievement of the reserves players in reaching their fourth straight Grand Final and hopefully winning their third straight flag.

The celebrations will take place in the function room of the Exit Inn, 15 Hall Street, Newport from 4:30pm.

GF preview - local paper.

GF preview by Howard Leigh from The Hobsons Bay Times.

Hat-trick on the line

Anthony Eames, the 1991 Liston Trophy winner, and his all conquering Williamstown reserves side are on the runway to win a hat-trick of VFL premierships.

The young Seagulls earned their stripes for a trip to Carlton's Optus Oval on Sunday with a 10-point win over North Ballarat in last Sunday's preliminary final at Port Melbourne.

They meet traditional rivals Port Melbourne in the curtain-raiser to the VFL senior grand final between the 'Borough and Sandringham.

Port Melbourne are coached by Williamstown football legends Saade Ghazi and Andrew Gibson.

The match, which starts at 11am, will also signal the retirement of Seagulls dual reserves premiership skipper Matthew Cape.

Williamstown administrator Brendan Curry said 25-year-old Cape would be turning his attention to Premier Cricket with Essendon this summer as a left arm bowler and batsman with a view to playing in the UK in the winter.

Williamstown's standouts last weekend were 22-year-old Adam Butler, an ex-Carlton top up player and Fremantle squad member, Collingwood rookie Zane Leonard, who battled a hamstring strain for most of the season, Kane McKenzie, Jeremy Dukes and Heath Lawry, who ploughed through sticky centre area and water-logged surrounds.

The game was over when you posted this.

Due to ladder position, Port would have been favorites, but I'm trying to get the scores so I can post them here.

For those interested, Sandy leads Port by 16 points at 3/4 time. Port to come home with the breeze.

Sandy held off a late charge by Port to win by 4 points.

Still no news from the reserves game.
