There seems to be an overabundance of backmen this year who get a tonne of cheap disposals by staying unmarked and letting their teammates do the hard stuff for them. Then they go on to do jack shite with the pill and although they may get 30 touches, never hurt the opposition.
Cornes has done this to an extent and so does McPhee. Although i admit that there are times where they do win the hard ball themselves. Joel Bowden is the absolute king of this ploy. 5 of his posessions is equivalent to 1 of Jimmy Clements.

I thought Port were very impressive in virtually every aspect of the game, made us look 2nd rate. Dunno how much of that was magpies making them look good, we did make some terrible mistakes at times and play with poor confidence and of course terribly undermanned forward and back, and also midfield without Buckley and Burns.
They were more skillful, harder, much better manning, pressure and tackling, backing up running and all the 1%'ers. Far better organised and clever especially up forward but everywhere. That could be coaching or our players' inability and inexperience to play smart, probably a bit of both. To me they look a real threat to unBearables, but time will tell, might be dismantled just as STK were on the w/e.
I wonder if this new tactical coaching position is some sort of admission of MM's limitations, could be a great move if someone with flair and instinct comes in to augment his obvious prowess in development etc. Mick Mcguane sounds like a great move to me.

Thats the trend the game is taking. Joel Smith had 37 touches in round five with many being easy kicks at half back. It aannoys me alot to see this. Maybe if they are all doing that we could send Bucks down there for some real drive and skill from defence. Not that Jimmy doesn't do a good job.PiesFan wrote:There seems to be an overabundance of backmen this year who get a tonne of cheap disposals by staying unmarked and letting their teammates do the hard stuff for them. Very disapointing in our accountability and our overpossesing. Our kicking was shocking and our confidence was shot. Our self belief was just not there. What's happened to Didak ? He has lost any confidence going to goal. It was bad to see us going back to that shitty wide boundary line style of play! On the positives Lonie and Rowe were good and Woewodin did his job at half back. Cloke would have been the better match for tredrea, Clement wasn't strong enough and looks very sore! I think its alright that Mick's making some of the other blokes work in the middle rather than buckley. But we always need Burns in there at stages the man is the soul of the football club!
