Great forwards past and present

Post by LeonSkyDiamonds »

The commentators on channel 9 were talking about records and how Lloyd was about to equal a long standing record. If Lloyd wins this years Coleman Medal he will become the 3rd player to win it 5 times, equal with Collingwood's Dick Lee and Gordon Nuts Coventry.Lee and Nuts had competion for the Coleman in their day wheras Lloyd is the last of the true permanent full forwards.Collingwood's tradition of great full forwards is unsurpassed.

The greatest era for the great full forwards was it either the Mckenna,Wade,Hudson era of the 70s or the Dunstall,Lockett,Ablett and maybe Modra and Sumich era of the mid 80s to mid 90s?

What i would give for a great Collingwood full forward now.Besides a good accurate kick and good hands a ff needs large body mass so as to add another string to his bow and allow him to out bustle his opponent close to goal ala Dunstall ,Lockett and Ablett. As Tazz often has to lead far up the ground to get his kicks and isn't a naturally stocky build,he would be ideally suited to a half forward flank. If Billy comes good(big lump of a lad) then we could have a great forward set up.If Davidson gets and stays fit and Billy Morrison becomes a good full forward a future forward line would look like this-

HF- Davidson Rocca Tarrant

FF- Fraser Morrison L.Davis or Didak

With Trav Cloke arriving in the offseason our ruck depth would allow us to play Fraser in the forward pocket, changing with Richards and T. Cloke.A ruck/forward/interchange triangle between those 3 would be a bonus. There is a lot resting on the shoulders of Billy. The abovementioned forward setup depends on weather Billy can become a good ff.Has he showed enough to suggest that he will be a good ff?If he is the goods and Davo can recover from his 2nd knee reco i can see us kicking cricket scores.Potentially the best forward line since Hawthorns mid 80s

HF- Buckenara Brereton Curran

FF- Matthews Dunstall Loveridge

or Hawthorn early 90s

HF- Buckenara P. Dear Brereton

FF- Hall Dunstall D.Jarman or Ben Allan

Ive seen a few games from the 60s and 70s and 80s on foxfooty lately.
players had to only touch the footy to be paid a mark back then
for example templeton kicked 15,8 in the last qtr against st kilda and not one of those marks would have been paid today.

the rule changes are just as much to blame for the lack of full fwds as the coaches themselves who would rather a diverse attack.

i put hudson and mckenna at the top of my list of old days full fwds.
they both had uncanny skills and a feel for the goals.
