Stop and think how many goals Taz and Pebbles would kick on them in a full game.
Rocca and Taz wouldn't kick any on him because neither of them play full forward. You actually think Rocca would kick many on Wakes? Rocca can't even kick many on Thornton or Harris!. Wakes has had a bad year this year, but so many of our players have. It's hard to defend when the players around you are doing shit all. Wakes is still one of the premier defenders in the competition, dont put him down because of his efforts this year in a struggling team.

Daks - this may be news to you but you don't play players on positions you match them up on opponents.

Pebbles would have a field day on Wakes as he is bigger and stronger than Hall and Lynch - and as for Taz on Presti - in that race it would be Taz first and daylight second.

Wakes has been a great defender for us - but when Hall tosses him away in the goalsquare and then beats him by 10 metres on a lead - you know that is an area we have to work on to improve.

OKeefe ran riot all night and Presti does try hard - but sometimes that aint good enough.

We have to look to the future with Tex, Max and Hall - but there is no reason why Wakes should not be at the Pies after 2005 as a defensive coach. Wakes has a great knowledge of the game but is not blessed with the speed and strength of Tex etc., We should be starting the knowledge transfer process as early as possible to get the quickest benefits.

Mate, i understand that we need to blood the youngsters, but i just feel that without Wakes down back, we will get a shite load of goals scored on us. We need Wakes to play next year.. he gives the young kids confidence, while also doing his bit. Fair enough if Mick decides to let him go, but i'd like to see him stay... he is a vital cog in our defence. I know we wont agree on this, so i respect your opinion, please respect mine.

Daks - you are correct Wakes is our best tall defender and regularly gets the best forward on the opposing team.

He has knowledge of the game that would be great to be passed on to young guns.

As I stated in another thread Wakes has taken some of the best marks in defense in the AFL this year - its just he aint getting any younger.

I will cop it for this but when Wakes has a not so great game there is only Jimmy supporting him and Presti has been AWOL all year and I would rather Tex and Max played instead of Presti for the rest of the year.

If we had only 1 tall defender down on form it could be a minor problem - when it is your 2 main tall defenders down on form it becomes a major problem.

I would hate to see Wakes knowledge go out the door and he really has passion for playing and the Pies.

I would be moving Presti out rather than Wakes but I cannot imagine we would have done worse than we did by playing Tex and Wakes last week.

Walkelin has had a pretty reasonable season. He won the game for us against the Crows. Against the Bulldogs he had 21 disposals and 7 marks. He started on the wing against the Saints. He has been towelled up a few times, more to do with the midfield not exerting enough pressure. Don't forget he carried a fractured cheekbone without missing a game.

Easy to stop full forwards from the lounge-room or the outer.
Get back on top.

So why did you? Mal was a good player who developed into a great one, and Leppa plays some great games without an opponent on him.
sq3 wrote:Don't get me wrong I think Wakes has been our best defender for the last 3 seasons - without doubt.
But he is the 2nd oldest on our list and we need to look to replacing him from 2005 onwards.
Well, there are a lot of younger blokes that badly need delisting before Wakelin does, and we lost enough experience with Richo, Molloy and Rupert. Youth doesn't win you premierships either, as we found out on GF day last year.

I though O'Keefe actualy shredded Cole in 1st half, and Presti got him after that? Can anybody confirm this?
