The Democrats did the right thing making abortion an issue and maybe, among other things, needed to go harder on that – it was a clear winner for them. Where I think they didn't gain anything was trying to appeal to anti-Trump Republicans by bringing the Cheneys into the campaign. They got nothing from it and only further alienated potential left-wing voters.

^^ He is hilarious, and often right on with his analysis but just because they didn't campaign on woke lines, the Dems were/are, rightly or wrongly, considered champions of woke policies.

Similarly it was the democrats who made abortion an issue, not Trump. Trump didn't run his campaign on abortion, and in fact was very quiet / silent about the issue. Yet most people think Trump ran an anti-abortion campaign.

Unusually for a Republican, Trump said he wouldn't sign a national abortion ban. Therefore, it would be up to individual states to decide the legality or illegality around abortion rather than it involving the federal government.

The Democrats tried to turn it into a signature issue and were emboldened by the 2022 midterm results where they exceeded polling expectations and some interpreted these results as being driven off the back of Roe vs. Wade being overturned by the SCOTUS following the Dobbs decision.

At the end of the day, it was the economy and immigration that were cited as being the biggest issues among voters. Harris and her campaign overestimated abortion being the biggest concern among voters, especially female voters which they were relying upon to win the election.
