What? We traded pick 58 for 60 and 66 and now have 4 late draft picks?
This one better be good! I can’t wait to hear the reasons for this trade making our draft hand appear worse again.

Possibly positioning ourselves for young McGuane next year. The Black and White Lion wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 6:18 pm https://www.afl.com.au/news/1253827/bri ... e-deadline

Some astute trading of picks as we did when Nick was due to come up in the next draft.

Previous picks total was 623
Revised total is 679
Provides greater wriggle room, enabling optiion to move for someone earlier which we've identified and may still be available.

So we've done a trade that gives Lions our pick 58 for their pick 60 and 66
Clearly something bigger at play here. With the aim to trade up the draft you'd imagine.
We can't take all 4 picks to the draft as we only have 3 list spots, so I imagine we'll do another pick swap on draft night

Re: Thinking ahead to 2024 draft...(and beyond)
we feel our player is available at either 58 or 60, but we gain pick 66
Yes, we will likely package 2 picks and move up the order a tad, but we still have 2 more selections.
But what's in in for Brisbane? why do the deal at all?
60+66=226 points and 58 only nets them 170. Maybe they owe us.

Re: Thinking ahead to 2024 draft...(and beyond)
So we’ve shared points with the lions to help them cover Levi Ashcroft and Sam Marshall. Are we going to try to trade up with our two picks in the 50’s and something else from the future? Or is it trade two picks for a future 3rd?

Re: Thinking ahead to 2024 draft...(and beyond)
If the 2 picks are worth less than fhe Brions think they have enough already and are confident about when they’ll get bids such they don’t need the extra pick.
So we can take advantage. Then we can use them for something else if we don’t need the 4th pick either

Re: Thinking ahead to 2024 draft...(and beyond)
Possibly it's for a future pick from another club or maybe an agreement with the Lions that if they run into points trouble we'll trade them back? Would this even be possible? The only other target I could think of would be with St Kilda possibly needing more to get their two Academy players in. An astute move or egg-on-face all round. Damn this draft day is taking forever...

Re: Thinking ahead to 2024 draft...(and beyond)
Yeah maybe.
Two picks in the 50’s not going to get you much further up the draft though. What will you get, a pick in the 40’s?
Apart from teams protecting bids who else is going to slide back for those? Does that get us an actual pick into the 30’s after the bids with pick slides on Brisbane and Essendon.
It does make it a little more interesting but still risky if other teams don’t buy into our strategy.
It would be harder to think we made this trade without another planned but why do it 5 minutes before the bell? That’s another mystery to me.

Think of Fly's background and attitude Lion. Not every move in the draft has to be about immediate gain. Doing another club a solid when it really costs you nothing is a good way of improving trade relationships. Even so early into his senior coaching career Fly has an enviable reputation as both a fair man and a straight shooter, when he sits down with Derick at the trade table other clubs know what he's all about. It just smooths the path for trades. The Black and White Lion wrote: ↑Sat Nov 09, 2024 8:02 am Yeah maybe.

Re: Thinking ahead to 2024 draft...(and beyond)
The club has simply bought themselves some insurance for their plans on draft night.
As it now stands they will be attending the draft with four live picks but can only use a max of three of those four picks anyway. Their aim will likely be to wait until they are deep into the draft when most matching bids have been used up and then hope to trade out their first two picks ( likely mid forties and late forties at that time ) for one pick that will secure them a pick around the forty mark. This then guarantees the club maintain their three live picks as required on the night. They may pass on their third pick or not, it will just depend whoever is left and how they rate them. If they didn’t do this pick swap before the deadline, then they would only be leaving themselves with too much to do on draft night. They will have enough on their plate trying to find a suitor who will trade two picks in the late forties for one pick in the early forties.

Re: Thinking ahead to 2024 draft...(and beyond)
On Big Footy someone has quoted a Herald Sun article - 'St Kilda NGA member Adrian Cole is considered likely to attract a bid in the late 30s or early 40s, after St Kilda’s third selection which currently stands at No. 32.'SLORT wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 2:39 pmYeah? But ~ "The St Kilda Next Generation Academy member was a mainstay for Sandringham in its third consecutive premiership, playing 15 games this year". The fact that Battle has gone would make me think they'd pick him up. He's ranked around 45 in the October power rankings. May be another option of swapping our picks 55 58 (377 points) for their last pick of 47 (316 points)? This would give them the points to match an early bid up to pick 39, or the possibility of taking Cole and another player should he drop later. And we would possibly get a crack at one of the other key forwards going around. I'd be happy to take two players (47 and 52, sliding to 40 and 45 due to F/S & Academy picks) on the night and leave one spot open for SSP.think better wrote: ↑Fri Nov 08, 2024 12:20 pm
Adrian Cole is mentioned as a possible Nathan Murphy replacement https://central.rookieme.com/afl/player/adrian-cole/
