Re: Trade Targets ~ Free Agency & MSD player discussion
Yes and no. WE currently have four PURE inside mids on our list - Mitchell, MacRae, Sullivan and Long. Mitchell is easily the best and then there’s daylight. None of those four could play anywhere else other than inside the square. What we really need to do is to let two of them go and then replace those two with one newly acquired QUALITY inside midfielder.
There’s is where Collingwood need to read the room and be smart. Mitchell will be finished at end of 2025, so there will be a decent opportunity for a QUALITY inside mid at Collingwood from 2026 onwards. Add to that, inside midfielders are now a dime a dozen and in surplus, so the club should either wait till the 2025 off season ( or possibly even this trade period ) and look to replace Mitchell ( end of 2025 ) with any quality inside mid that’s up for trade. At the same time, keep the two next best inside mids on the list but cut ties with anyone who falls in behind third in line.

Essendon, I dare you.
Zach Merrett to St Kilda for picks 7 and 8. Try offloading them Parish, Shiel, Stringer, Laverde, Cox, Hobbs, and Wright while you're at it. Offer picks 7, 8, 9, F1 to WCE for H Reid. Sounds easy.

^ Well I mean Essendon are too proud to move Merrett. And It'll probably take a bit more to get Reid. But what a starting point.

@Pies2016 Isn't perryman an inside mid? I know he's been playing HB at GWS but that's because they have a stacked midfield.
Allan also seems to be best as an inside mid although he can play outside.
I agree, we only need a couple of inside distributors, the way the game is going you need outside speed and skill.

Part-time only. More suited to a wing or flank.stui magpie wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 4:06 pm @Pies2016 Isn't perryman an inside mid? I know he's been playing HB at GWS but that's because they have a stacked midfield.

Richmond are being ridiculous. Getting pick 6 for Rioli is already a massive steal. But they want more. WTF is that about? Daniel Rioli is not Chris Judd. Pick 6 is more than enough.Take_a_Screamer wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 4:15 pm Wow the complexity...

Let's just hope we get our deal done soon.

Perryman is an inside mid but as we all know he can play other positions. I would say the same with Allan ( off a small sample size ) Versatility and height adds value to your spot on the list.stui magpie wrote: ↑Thu Oct 10, 2024 4:06 pm @Pies2016 Isn't perryman an inside mid? Given what they’ve repeatedly shown at AFL level, you could also begrudgingly call Nick, DeGoey and Pendles inside mids too but that’s because they just do everything well anyway. We also know, the key to those guys is to maximise their strengths by giving it to them in space, even though they’ve long proven they can win the footy in tight.
The list profile problem really starts when you try finding other positions for the likes of Mitchell, Sullivan, Long and MacRae. They really have no chance of holding down any other position in a decent team. Mitchell is fine cause he’s our best pure inside mid and we all agree we need one in the seniors but holding onto another three who can’t play elsewhere, inhibits your list ( and it doesnt help they aren’t up to regular AFL standard either)
It’s going to be an interesting watch but I would be surprised if we start next season with all four on the list. Ideally we would find a home for at least one of them and also start planning for life after Mitchell at the same time.

P2016, I'd actually put Pendles in the same boat. He's been tried in defence and up forward, but really only plays well as a midfielder. If he gets squeezed out of the midfield, he's most likely squeezed out of the side. Just saying.
Surprisingly (to some I'm sure anyway), Sidey is the one who has more strings to his bow. He's demonstrated he can hold down positions in defence, forward, as a winger, midfielder and most recently as a specialist tagger. Who'd have thunk it?

Fair call as a mid fielder only but he’s so much more than any garden variety extractor, he’s creative and impactful. While he continues to play like that ( and that's ever diminishing) he would continue to hold his spot. At some point he may well be squeezed out ( and if that happened, we’d be going by pretty well ) but I think we can all safely say, it would never be at the expense of MacRae, Sullivan or Long. They’re the type of players we need to both move on and improve on, especially with Mitchell likely finishing up at the end of 2025.

Man is this years trade period a snoozefest. Can someone whack the AFL with a broom to wake them up? No one is paying attention to the their weeklong display of ads
