@K I've said it before, one of two things are apparent when a player consistently gets out-marked, drops marks or get pushed under the ball.
They are not gifted in football DNA in order to read the flight of the ball or the more damning one, they don't like physical contact.
I think we know which version we're looking at here.

Well it's certainly not the latter. You don't survive for 200+ games as a number one ruckman in the AFL if you can't handle physical contact.
Physical contact is the essence of the ruck role.

^ruck rules in '04 changed the physical side of the ruck contest from what we knew. The shortened run up is nothing like what ruckman had to physically contest with when we played / ruckman of the day. No third man up, the ruck circle effectively changed this roles requirements.
Grundy certainly had his time in the Sun as a mobile ruckman but the physical marking contests is where he gets exposed. He's never been any good in a pack and why he wasn't any good as a forward.
He now looks like an outside midfielder asked to play inside.
Max Gawn is streets ahead of him on physicality and imposing himself on a game.

He's never been a good mark but it's not because of a fear of physical contact. He's just not a good mark.
While the physical side of rucking may be less than it once was, it's still highly demanding. Being grappled and crashed into by 100+ kg blokes dozens of times per game is no walk in the park, even if you're 100kg yourself.

^ That's right. The reason I was impressed by Grundy as he emerged was because of the way he physically punished the opposition rucks. He liked the physical contest and was the best-ever at it. Pity he only had Treloar and Adams (thanks for that, Nathan) to hit it to when he was at his peak with us.

There's a fair bit of revisionism on Nick's about Thor - putting all the idiocy about the contract aside (and bearing in mind that the worst contract Collingwood ever did was actually the one to bring Treloar to the Club - because if we really want to talk about a guy who didn't like it hard, he's the one people might talk about, particularly given that was obvious to any casual watcher of a GWS game back in the day), he ground his opposition down, contest after contest, over the course of a match. People used to get silly on here when Naitanui got a hitout against him - but never seemed to comprehend that Collingwood repeatedly blew open games against guys like him and Gawn because they simply couldn't cope with the physical demands of rucking against Grundy - hence, 60% gametime and opposition ruckmen looking on while their team went down the gurgler, because they were spent.

Anyway, that's all ancient history. What isn't is that the genius coaching Melbourne dropped him from the team and that team has looked hopeless ever since, whereas the Swans picked him up and now sit comfortably on top of the ladder. Yes, they have a good bunch of midfielders - but they had those last year and were also-rans. There isn't really much change to the Sydney midfield personnel from 2023, apart from them adding Grundy.

Your rewriting history again
Sydney’s dominance isn’t because of Grundy
Look at what happened when they moved Heeney into the midfield late last season with Vickey as the ruck
They won 7 lost 1 (by a goal)
The Heeney move coupled with Gulden’s increased output and having slow midfielders like Parker out gave them a new dimension
Pure fact (percentage wise) Sydney win more clearances when McLean rucks than when Grundy rucks
Grundy was going ok in the early rounds by virtue of having a extended off season but once Cox got into him at half time in a game he’s gone back to being the Grundy we all recognise

The Treloar bashing you carry on about shows your distinct lack of knowledge
Treloar is ans has always been an outside mid. Had we played him in that role he would have excelled like he does now at the dogs. For whatever reason Buckley tried to make him into something he wasn’t (a bit like Melbourne trying firstly to turn Grundy into a resting forward and now Cox trying to turn Grundy into a decent ruck neither happened)
You bang on about Treloar being the worst kick you’re ever seen yet his career stats show his kicking efficiency is over 6% better than Sidey’s (this season it’s just short of 10%)
You watch games with blinkers on you only see what you want to see and not what actually happens in a game
The selectors of the AA side obviously watch games they out Treloar in the AA team and left Grundy out of the extended squad completely (even though they named 3 rucks in the 44 man squad)
Ask yourself this question if the reason Sydney are top of the table is because of Grundy why did the Swans make a play for Marshall from St Kilda ?
Want the answer ? They viewed him as a valuable player
Sydney took Grundy because he was cheap while they either drafted or traded for the ruck of there future
Simple as that

P4S if Grundy is so valuable to Sydney then why didn’t they nominate him in the MVP voting ?
Heeney Gulden Warner where there nominations
The dogs nominated Bont Treloar and Jones
I rest my case

Grundys best asset was his running ability / mobility to work over the other ruckman aerobically throughout a match. That's where he could exploit this as a tall-midfielder and work off his opponent.
His tap work was good but certainly not elite.
It worked well for two elite seasons before opposition coaches implemented strategy to curb that influence.
When challenged by the physicality of someone like Gawn, that's where Grundy stepped across Gawn's line to deny him space and the ability to run and jump at the ball.

I assume he wants to coach West Coast...

Former Fremantle star Chris Mayne says he is ready to step into the world of coaching as he begins to eye up his next career move.

The retired forward — who had a 14-year career across the Dockers and Collingwood that included two grand finals — has been busy since relocating back to Perth with his young family after his stint with the Pies came to an end.

Former Pie Tim Broomhead lead the North Albury Grasshoppers to a 3 point win over the Wodonga Bulldogs in the O&M elimination final on Sunday arvo. Pies VFl player Josh Mathey playing for the bulldogs.
Ed Allen kicked our last goal of the year at the 58minute mark of the last quarter

I knew Craig Kelly's son Will played for Collingwood but did not know he has another son Jake and who just quit the Essendon club.

Essendon defender Jake Kelly has made the shock decision to retire after 11 seasons in the AFL across two clubs. - Seems he also played for our VFL team at one stage.

Interesting that Tay Adams seems to be at risk of being dropped from the Swans.

All kinds of irony if this happens. Could potentially miss a flag with them because he’s not best 23 after missing one with us with through injury.

He would actually have helped us a lot this year with Mitchell out (and got plenty of minutes) - but would have stymied youth development. I suppose some of our “list regeneration” has started (when we let him go) - but hadn’t dawned on me until just now.

I actually hope that if Swans win that he’s in the team. Probabably deserves a medallion. Always liked him when he played for us.
It's never as good/nor bad as it seems...

He won't have to worry swans out in straight sets. GWS beat them this week then Lions send them out the following week.

You may be right but I’m not too sure about the results. The Swans are a bloody good team and hard to beat. They might surprise you with how hard they will be at the ball.
I term the current Collingwood attack based strategy “Unceasing Waves” like on a stormy and windy day with rough seas. A Perfect Storm ☔️
