Organised the funeral yesterday and the SAS are helping out, which is awesome.

The last game he watched, I was hoping we could get the win. So glad I got to take him to that ANZAC day game a few years ago and that he saw the Pies take the flag last year.

The devastation of Jasper, at the top end ofthe icefields Parkway. Just a beautiful amazing piece of the earth, the towns is 30-50% destroyed by a wildfire, rain thankfully came at 3am. Think deer on your doorstep, bears walking by the road, huge elk peeking through trees, glaciers, lakes so beautiful you can’t believe it’s real.

I’ve been early spring, driven through a full on blizzard, and again in summer, 51 weeks ago. Last year another fire meant we had to keep an eye on the air quality. So fricken sad.

Hang in there, Skidster. I'm not sure what your relationship with him was like, but use this time to remember, celebrate and embrace all the good things, and the things you know were also valued by others attending. Remembering the good and the humourous, and mending fences and old family tensions with magnanimity, can bring a good vibe to a tough day.

If you're saying a few words, don't worry about speaking perfectly. In these circumstances people value sincerity, honesty of feeling and generosity, even it means a few pauses and tears. I spoke at dad's funeral, and one thing that worked well was I invited the grandchildren (my nephews and nieces) up to put their hand on the coffin, and to say a special goodbye together, to make it more tangible for them and to make them central to the process, and to emphasise the continuity and presence of someone that remains with us through generations after them. That was also a way of involving my sisters without them having to come up front, which they were too nervous and distraught to do.

It went really well. 2 of his old mates made great speeches and the SAS representative speaking about his service in the army, something he was extremely proud of, was very moving.
I stood with Mum when she spoke, she was solid as, I said a few words.... I can't even remember what I said to be honest.

Some great memories shared amongst family and friends.

He shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary him, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember him.

@Skids , how are you feeling in the aftermath of the funeral? It can be a bit of a let down because you steel yourself for the send off, and have a lot of people around you, but then get left with your own thoughts afterwards. In my case it didn't really register for some time, but I was flying in to the funeral from overseas.
