Heard it on good authority Brayshaw has cut all ties with Melbourne recently
Had a falling with the coach over settlement payment coming his way
The coach wanted him to accept whatever the AFL sanctioned could be outside the cap and forgo any other monies that would need to be included under the cap
AFL hasn’t released the final rules but was suggested that only years 1&2 would be fully guaranteed payment with 75% of those wages excluded from the cap then work downwards on a sliding scale which would be a deterrent to clubs signing players in long term deals especially if they had a history of concussion
If (and it’s IF) they follow the model talked about in the media Brayshaw gets full payment this season and next with only 75% included in the cap but the remaining years on his deal would be significantly included in the cap (scale shown in media was year 3 60% year 4 50% year 5 and beyond 30% excused from cap.
Based on that Brayshaw wages would be (based on media reports he was to average a million a season with increases as cap increased yearly) year 3 $400k under the cap year 4 $500k under the cap and beyond $300k under the cap
Melbourne will be lumbered paying it and Goodwin wanted him to basically give up that cash for the betterment of the club
Considering he won’t be able to earn anywhere near that sort of cash away from football he’s entitled to it IMO
Conversely Collingwood gave Murphy an extra year even knowing he wasn’t likely to play again and we will be paying that totally under the cap.
My understanding is the club is also working with him on transitioning to find work be it at the club or whatever he sees his future as.

This doesn’t quite match your description…

90%, 75%, 50% relief in year 1,2,3 then none at all beyond that. So we probably have to book $50-60k (10% of whatever we contracted him for) for 2025 in our TPP.

What about Goodwin though. Pretend good bloke. Imagine getting forced out of the game by the doctors and having your coach ask you to hand some cash back! Flog.
It's never as good/nor bad as it seems...

Melbourne's official version: Brayshaw was gonna be runner or other stuff on the bench... But he found it too traumatic, given the way his career was cut short.

Definite contrast there between how Collingwood handled Murphy and the suggested way Melbourne handled Brayshaw, but to be fair Murphy wasn't on big money so giving him the extra year has F all impact, it's just a nice thing to do.

Asking Brayshaw to forfeit money when he's just lost his livelihood is just a Cnut's act and he's got every right to say FU and walk.
Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down.

True stui but be it $300k or $1 million doing the right thing is doing the right thing
The club had no obligation other than morally to do what it did
I applaud the club for giving him the financial stability to survive while he figures out his next step

K yeah there version doesn’t make sense
If he’s got trauma then fine but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t have taken a position somewhere in the club not involved with running onto the field during play
To me it’s highly more likely to be a case of hey take less money from our cap we will give you a job running water and pay you so it all works out the same in the end except for we can only pay you $100k a year for running water so you’ll have to do it for 20 years to get even ok
