AFL Hall of Fame Watch - Pendlebury and Sidebottom

Here's a little sleeper thread. Neither of them can go in until at least 2030 (they must be retired at least 5 years), so even if they don't play on after 2024, 5 clear seasons means they're 6 years away, at minimum.

How much after that will Pendles have to wait for elevation to Legend status, I wonder?

Pendlebury is looking at 2033, 20234 as he'll play a couple more years.

Sidebottom eligible in 2030, might make it by 2050.

Dunstall was inducted into the hall of fame in 2002 as soon as he was eligible. 22 years later (a few days ago) he was made a legend.

Pendles I expect to go in as soon as eligible, Sidey maybe a little longer.

Pendles and Sidey will go in quickly.

But it took 12 years for a sole Collingwood person to be inducted, between Bucks and Swan.

Therold Merrett still waiting to be inducted. Dick Lee still not elevated. Daisy Pearce and Erin Phillips expected to go in next year.

The OP specifically asked about Legend status.

For Pendles, 5 years to enter HOF, plus let’s say 22 is close enough to 30 isn’t it?

Sidey won’t be a legend. Given it took 7 years to get Swannie in to the HOF then I expect it will 10 years for him.

You would expect Pendles to go into HOF the day he becomes eligible given he will be the games record holder when he retires
Then it’s anyone’s guess when he’s elevated to legend status but given his career records in comparison to other legends you would assume applying the same criteria he would likely be around 8/10 years after becoming a HOF member
Given 300 games gets you into the HOF Sidey will make it at some stage but won’t be a legend.

^ And since Harry Collier, 6 time premiership player (the last two as captain), best player in the Machine (his 2 B&Fs came in 1928 and 1930), Brownlow Medallist and general epoch-defining champion has been overlooked, Pendles is no certainty for Legend status, either. The best we can say is that if Pendles had not played his career at Collingwood, they'd induct him as a Legend at first eligibility.

As for Sidey, if Lenny Hayes and Brad Johnson can be in the AFL Hall of Fame, Sidebottom would be a certainty (if he hadn't had the misfortune to play for Collingwood). More best-on-grounds than, eg, Robert Flower, Peter Knights, Darren Jarman, Ken Fraser, Darrell Baldock, Peter Moore, John Nicholls, Nigel Lappin, Francis Bourke, Shaun Burgoyne, Alex Jesaulenko, Kouta, Quinlan, Peter Daicos, Michael Tuck, Bill Picken, Tim Watson, Ron Barassi and Haydn Bunton. And at least 4 of those guys are HoF Legends. It's certainly become a sport to be a Collingwood supporter and run down Sidey's accomplishments. It's a bit of a public embarrassment, really.
