I agree it was a great 2nd quarter, with non-match fit players, our best two forwards out, a heavy wet ground, three first year players etc. it wasn't a bad effort and you can see why we tired in the last - but it wont help us reach the finals. We needed that one - 9th is such a lonely number.

I am a Melbourne fan who posted here a few times on the game thread last week.
I was there yesterday and enjoyed the win. I have read the threads on this board and a lot of you are obviously gutted by the loss.
A lot of you are seeing the negatives of your position and I believe that some of you have un-real expectations given your run with injury and suspension.
Mick Malthouse put it well after the game when he compared the Pies present position with that of Melbourne at the same time last season. We had a lot of injuries during the season and slao a lot of players with interupted pre-seasons. You guys are in exactly the same position. We had to play players that were 70-80% fit just tp get a team out there.
This season we have a limited injury list and few players that have had tribunal problems.
I do not think you will get in the 8 this season but expect to see you back up there next year.
See you next time around.

We lost it because we continued to play like it was pissing down rain. Melbourne realised it wasn't and started to run again. Burns was targeted by the Dees and belted high quite a few times.
And the whole Shawy thing.. shit this the same bloke who Mick Plays Favorites got his name from. I thought it was strange him sitting... BUT for people here to rag on about Malthouse... the same people 3 games ago wanted Shaw at Willi.
I was gutted, but hey, you just got to detatch yourselves from our current situation and look at the quality depth we have got coming up. The Clokes are gems and so is Richards. Amazing how people overlook 10 good things players do (with or without getting accredited a possession mind you) and bag them for one or two errors.
Dids is having a shit year, people will be calling for his head soon. But next year he will have learned from this one (quite normal for young players to have a down season after a terrific one eg Josh Fraser, Rocca, Tarrant, J Cloke) and will be a star. I don't care what people say about Leon, he is becoming a better allround footballer week by week and probably next year he will start to put it all together. Players don't improve much in weeks, only fitness wise and confidence perhaps.. Real change takes years.

Well said, Cam.
I was absolutely gutted and so disappointed when I got home after the game last night but, after reading the negative posts, decided I'd wait until today before saying anything or I might have started an on-line brawl. 24 hours puts everything into perspective.
Anyway, it's clear that the tone of the posts has changed. Some people, at least, are starting to see the positives in the game.
My final comment: in another thread, I've pointed out that we really only have 24 players who I would call "automatic selections", so after taking out Taz, Rocca and O'Bree, we had only 21 for this game, and three of them - Bucks, Presti and Dutch - were clearly underdone. That's too much leeway to concede to Melbourne, who are sitting third for good reason. That we got in front - and don't forget that after Lokan's goal, we got three points in front again with not all that long to go - and were beaten by just 9 points in the end, means it was a damned fine effort. Those who have been critical of individual players and incidents are just not giving enough credit to Melbourne. In the end, they had just a little bit more than we had. Melbourne won the game when it was there to be won; we did not lose through some incompetency on our part. It's no disgrace to have lost that game.

I too was gutted, but not anymore. It always takes me a while to get over a loss. and people who know me can back that up!.Lets just look at the positives.. the emergance of Stretch, Cam Cloke, Maxy, Swanny, Ritchie, and other good news is that Jase is starting to get some confidence back!.. Our kids are looking great, they all have bright futures. We lost to a team that is second on the ladder, there's no shame in that.

The theme for many games this year has been slow start, better in the 2nd/3rd and fall away at the end of the game. A bit more intensity in the first and last would make the world of difference.
Fitness has been mentioned as an excuse, bugger me we would have to be the worst conditioned side in the league over the first 12 rounds.

I dont understand why people can say this loss was as bad as the one against the Scum. What did you all expect? We went into this game, without 2 of our most important players. Miss either Taz and Pebs, and we are basically gorn. Yet, in their abscence, Cam Cloke did very well up forward, as did Maxwell when he was up there. Holland played well, Presti did ok, C1 was fantastic, Richards continued to improve, Coley continued to improve. I was very happy to see Josh lift his game. We needed him to fire and he did in the first half.
Melbourne are equal 2nd, and they have a history of running out games extremely well. We didnt lose to some shit team. We lost to a team who have been playing committed football all year. We needed to be in front by alot more. We have a young list. Many first year players find it difficult to run out 4 quarters of footy, which might be the reason why we tend to fade in games. Along with bux, dutchie, burnsy and tarkyn............thats 4 of our top midfielders who are underdone. Add Josh to that too, he looked like he tired a bit.
It is very disappointing to lose when 30 points in front. But in this modern game, 30 points is nothing. If u dont bury ur opposition, they will come back and bite u in the ass. All in all, we lost by 9 points. 9 points from what would have been one of the greatest victories we have produced in the last 3 years. Its not a win, but at least it wasnt from lack of effort, or even lack of skill. They are just better then us on the day.
There are alot more positives to come from this loss. The only negative was that we lost. While it would have been better to play shit and win, instead of play well and lose........ lets not start comparing this to the Carlton game. We played shite all day against the Scum, and then when they started to play ok, we still played shite. I remember being embarrassed after that game, there was no sense of embarrassment after yesterday, just disappointment.

Exactly. People should realize that we started getting back into the game and our momentum before the rains started. And how happy were we at half time ... the noise of the crowd said it all. That was what I loved ... and the playes gave their best. Cam's goal, marks ... McG goal, Leon goal, Didak marks, Buckley marks and goal to name a few ... running players winning the ball. Yeah, in the end it wasn't enough and we couldn't defend a 30 point lead. But pre-game we were wondering where our goals were going to come from ... our goals came, only fell off by two against a full strength no.3 team.Cam wrote: I was gutted, but hey, you just got to detatch yourselves from our current situation and look at the quality depth we have got coming up. It would have been great to have won ... but we didn't. Maybe there were a few mistakes by the players and coach ... no one's perfect. It's easy to criticise on hindsight. We are not at the level of Brisbane yet ... hopefully we will be there soon. They have the confidence and the winning methods firmly embodied in them ... but keep in mind it doesn't take much to come down hard. It may not happen this year ... but it will.
I see a lot of positive even though we are losing. We have to be able to cover for loss of key players ... either through injury or suspension. Our midfield is getting better to cover for the loss of Buckley, Burns etc. Our defence has stood up without Presti. The ruck is in good hands .... Fraser, Richards, Cam. The forward line is still a bit rusty without Rocca and Taz ... but there are silver linings ... Cam Cloke, Didak, Fraser etc. All these games will hold good for our future.
Regards to Shaw ... as Cam said ... a lot of people were bagging MM for selecting him ... and now they complain of not giving him enough game time. Damned if u do, damned if u don't. Maybe he would've made a difference, maybe not ... we will never know that. What's happened has happened ... lets look into the future now. I can understand the disappointment ... I was devastated ... but life goes on.
Let's be patient as we always have been. Let's be what Collingwood has always stood for ... never give up.

Good post mate...
I think what hurts most about this match is that we lost without using all our capabilities (MCG and Shaw). It's filled with could'ves and should'ves so it hurts more than being thrashed by the Saints or whoever else.
There are many positives in the players' performances, i just genuinely believe the gameplan and coaching staff will not lead us to a grand final. Or anywhere near it. Or maybe they will, but after making a lot of mistakes which have delayed the journey by years.
Still, when i come back from my trip to lebanon (leaving on the 26th) I will be there again, cheering and supporting them... as 99% of the army will.
GO PIES!

Have fun overseas sheriffe.
I can see why you are frustrated about MCG and Shaw. I dont know why MM did what he did, so i am not going to bother thinking about it because who knows what happened.
I find it funny that weeks ago ppl were calling for Shaws head. We are like yo-yo's sometimes arent we? When our side is in trouble like yesterday, i personally dont turn to Shaw to do something about it. I turn to bux, burnsy, woey, Josh etc etc to do something about it. For some reason, they couldnt yesterday. But i dont think if Shaw was on, he would have been able to do what those 4 couldnt.
Still its no excuse not to give him a run. We might as well have had 21 players playing yesterday. Why was he selected when he didnt even play? Will he get dropped next week then? He did shite all because he was only on for like 10 mins. I would have preferred Dane Swan to play......

I'm a bit surprised people are turning on MM ... I reckon he has done an absolutely brilliant job in getting us to play as a great team. We dont have the class of a Brisbane, or the depth of some other clubs, but he had us playing as a champion team. This year, our lack of depth has been exposed. MM was building from nothing and I think we are clearly on track. Of course we have taken a step back this year but I would argue that is merely a sign of our youth and lack of depth.
Does MM make mistakes? Of course, dont we all.
We have a lot of hard workers but are short on class. The class is starting to show though but until it does, we cant afford injuries.
Think about what is coming through:
C Cloke 19
G Richards 21
N Maxwell 21
M McGough 19
A Didak 21
R Lonie 21
I know we are all impatient, but they are kids and need some time to develop
