#54 Sam Sofronidis

Post by LaurieHolden »

Our VFL side should prove a good watch over the 2024 season. For those wanting to get back to grass roots style footy, I'd be keen to read what you think of #54 Sam Sofronidis.
He followed up a 14 disposal (7 kick, 7 handball), 4 marks 3 tackle debut with a 20 disposal (7 kick, 13 handball), 5 marks 2nd game.

With Josh Eyre edging him out of a SSP spot, if he keeps on the same trajectory, a mid-season rookie spot might present.
Sofronidis, Eyre and Dean down back poses as a formidable tall VFL backline.

I'm not quite sure how these things work but you'd have to think he was told he was very close
Playing in the VFL side exposes him to the team style and access to the coaches. If needed mid season, he'd be way ahead of any other options

There's still quite a few IFs to this. We took 3 players in the SSP so not even sure we have a spot available for the MSD yet?
McStay recovery looks good but we don't want a Doedee repeat. Its going to be a tough call to say in May June that McStay can't make it back, especially if we've climbed the ladder again and look like contending. His motivation to get back will be through the roof but that also represents the risk. Chances that he gets back and is a match winner are statistically low. But the 2023 PF performance for the first 2.5 quarters showed his importance to this team as a lead up and contested marking forward.
Knock on wood we have no more serious injuries this year otherwise Kreuger is on track for at least 2 more injuries this year.

And pending all that if we do have an MSD spot available, no guarantee it will be low enough to take a Hutchison or Sofrinidis if they perform in the VFL.
Ed Allen kicked our last goal of the year at the 58minute mark of the last quarter

AFL clubs need to have a spare Rookie list position @ May 31 to get a selection in the draft.
Rookie list spots can be opened up if an AFL-listed player retires or picks up a long-term injury, with players in those categories being placed on the Inactive List.
Clubs with available Rookie list positions will select in reverse order of their ladder positions, with every club having their single selection, before the teams with two or more will get to select, also in reverse ladder order.
