Given Tasmania will be part of the competition in 2028, then the 2027 draft will be their first.

Roll back to when the most recent entrant to the AFL in GWS entered the competition and their 2010 Underage Selection, NSW Zone Selection and Rookie Draft (Advance) selection, Uncontracted Signings and Concessional Selections.
https://www.draftguru.com.au/clubs/grea ... ern-sydney

They then went into the 2011 National Draft first round picks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14.
2012 National Draft first round picks 1, 2, 3, 12, 14.
2013 National Draft first round picks 1, 2.

Gold Coast it was much the same from 2009~
https://www.draftguru.com.au/clubs/gold-coast

So, point being from 2027 - only 4 drafts away, Tasmania will be taking the countries best talent as well as getting access to incumbent Club lists.

I hope Wrighty gets well rested over his sojourn, our list management will need to be seamlessly executed over the coming years to ensure we remain competitive through to 2030 and beyond. I hope he's not lured back to Tassie!
Our Father / Son development might prove critical once again. While it's simply a hypothetical, imagine our current list without Moore and the Daicos bros.

Good point. I'd wonder how long post 60 yrs of age he would be with us anyway.
Slight but possible chance he could go up there in 26 as a consultant for a couple of years.
The AFL will have deep pockets, if it comes to money, sayonara.

KPF please, draft, trade FA, not fussed but we need a genuine one now and another on if he next few years. Been a long time since Travis Cloke was clunking and spraying them.

BTW, don’t recruit Tasmanians. They will all piss off to play for the Devils

^I think this draft period will see us fare a lot better in the draft than what the initial picks indicate.
Several Clubs and namely Essendon & Port are desperate for a classy small forward.
With a competitive tender, we might be able to dislodge Essendon pick #35 (522 points) or Ports #32 (584 points) for Richards rather than letting him walk into the draft. It'd effectively trade a speculative pick for a player.
Essendon have picks #15 & #35 and won't want to miss their Academy pick in Isaac Kako. With Dodoro gone, maybe Essendon will be open to a deal with us / the rest of the competition.

IF we could achieve similar for McInnes then we might find we accumulate approx. 1,000 points, and with that pushes us into sufficient points to trade up into a top 20 pick.

Levi Ashcroft (BNE F/S) + Sam Marshall (BNE Academy), Ben Camporeale (CAR F/S) are touted to be top 10 draft candidates, let alone the handful of other prospective top 10 Academy picks (GCS Academy~ Leonardo Lombard), so we might then we be in a position to trade our later picks of equivalent value for a higher draft position.

Everyone wins, they get their man, and we go up the draft order. And it's not out of the realms of possibility we end up close to the equivalent of the pick we traded to Freo.

Yeah, exciting time ahead. For a preview for how things may go over the next few months it'd be worthwhile (re)watching ~

For years we’ve all complained we keep recruiting midgets. Now we’re complaining we’re trading them away. 🤷‍♂️

Glad we bumped this. It’s going to occupy a bit of conversation going forward.
I’d be very surprised if we don’t trade out our future first rounder in order to significantly boost our flexibility in 2024. With a late first rounder, we could either go the draft or use it on a ready made player who fills an immediate need. Given that young McGuane is already being talked about as a likely too 10 talent in 2025, we would still land a high end talent in 2025 without the need to keep our first round pick. The more interesting conversation is where would any suitor for that first rounder, see Collingwood finishing in 2025. It would be one of those very rare conversations where Collingwood won’t be pumping up their chances in 2025.

The other point that needs to be made when we’re talking about points accumulation is the over simplified maths of any club just rolling up a bunch of later picks that total 2000 odd points ( or whatever ) and then expecting they can be traded for another clubs first rounder of a similar value. It doesn’t work that way. Clubs who are happy to trade out their first rounder because they have high end F / S and NGA talent coming in, don’t just give something so valuable away in return for the same value of later picks. Why would they ? Theres no benefit in wasting a valuable commodity on an accumulation of another clubs “ junk “. The club with the first rounder can gain so much more for their first pick, including either splitting it ( and using one as draft pick and the other as points ) or trading it out for a player and also receiving back a later pick as a sweetener. They can then build the combination of required points with both the steak knives and their own later picks, all while having used the core of their first rounder to invest elsewhere.
What Collingwood ultimately gain out of a CURRENT poor draft hand is going to be a fascinating watch.

Was about to labour the same point. This is a useful guide, but if youre trying to pick kids in the draft of course you want the tenth pick and not pick #20 and #37 instead... The commentary about pulling forward next years first rounder to somehoe use this year makes sense if we have our eye on a F/S etc (which is when the points system does actually make a little more sense).
It's never as good/nor bad as it seems...

Have the Wright-Wells alternative to bidding for F/S / NGA occured?
My reference is to when we matched a bid for Naicos at pick 4 two years ago we used picks 38, 40, 42 and 44 to achieve the required points. The Bulldogs did similarly with Sam Darcy that year when he was chosen at No. 2, and a year earlier when Jamarra Ugle-Hagan was bid on at pick one.

Might need an update on the new rules if that's the case.

The key point here is, we’re fortunate to have a number of clubs who will be looking for draft points. Having established that, it’s also worth noting, those clubs who are prepared to trade out a first rounder have a valuable asset at their disposal. Generally, that asset is far from being maximised if they are only swapping it out for one other clubs late picks. As I have always said come the draft and trade period, there are many ways to skin a cat and we’re going to need to know every one of them.

Nice work Coach Laurie.

Hope a few of us will still be lurking around somewhat until trade time....
