Look, that was a shocker. We were destroyed in more ways than one.

The first way was like Carlton did they played keepings off. Chipped the ball around a lot and minimised turnovers across half back.

Now, probably more importantly is that we DID NOT react to this by pushing up and applying frontal pressure to their short chipping to create turnovers around our half forward line. This needs to become our switch in game plan for the remainder of the season as teams now try to counter our half back run and gun style we've been playing all year. Evolve now or die on the vine.

That was our worst performance since round 9 last year.The players looked tired and couldn’t run,even in the first quarter.Something’s wrong.It seems like that Port Adelaide game has cooked both us and Port.We’ve both been terrible since that game.

Port have been poor either side of that game, so i wonder if that game wasnt as good as it seemed

The gap between Hawthorns best and worst is large but when at their best they have the capacity to move the ball quickly and score heavily when they have the momentum.

Can't recall to many times across the years that Hawthorn haven't shown up when playing Collingwood and I'm sure Mitchell would love a scalp before the season is out.

Well, I was hoping to be wrong.

40 odd years of losing far more than we win against Hawthorn isn't irrelevant history, it's a pattern of performance that once again repeated today.

Problem is form isn't just a switch you can flick on and off as you please.

We have been destoyed out of the middle for awhile. This is supposed first choice midfield...who do you bring in?

I would also hardly refer to Carlton as 'crap' as it stands we would be in serious strife facing them in a final.

Right now our finals form is 0-2 ...we aren't the Brisbane Lions of 01-03

Here's an optimistic view:

* The players may have been doing an intensive training block one month out from the finals- this may explain the lethargy.

* Several players need a rest- it is a shame that Macrae and Carmichael are both injured- both would have got a run today.

* Mitchell needs a rest- ditto Pendelbury

* Nick Daicos needs to go back to to the half-back line- Noble out and Markov in his stead.

* Cox and Frampton in next week (Murphy injured)

Flys reluctance to manage or rotate players through the team at the back end of the season is now showing as the wrong strategy.
Ginnivan, Carmichael, McCrae, Allan, Kelly, Ryan and McInnes should all have had some game time over the season to keep the core players fresh but also to keep themes youngsters at AFL level so when the moment like now arises, they will be ready to go and not behind the eight ball.
Poor strategy by Fly imho and unfortunately it looks like the cards are all about to fall unless changes are made.

Amen to that. Hawks had nothing to lose today, they did beat the Lions a few weeks ago, too. I hate being hot favourites, always fraught with danger. That was a very poor defeat, a shocker, nothing like the team of a month ago, we just did not look right all day. Yep, in a slump, any hubris, gone right out the window now, now the pressure is right on us. Definitely need to make a statement next week, need bout 4 changes. Maybe Frampton, Ginnivan, Bianco, or Carmichael, in, re fresh the side a bit. Fly has to get us up for next week, we like a challenge, and that match v Cats is what we need now, get back to basics of our gameplan.
