Good luck with it mate, and get out of the joint as soon as you can. You'll be far better recuperating at home as soon as that's practical.

Talking about surgery and booze, when I had my umbilical hernias fixed 3 years ago, after I woke up I got a glass of red wine with dinner and, when I asked nicely, the nurse went and found me a second one. Helps the recovery better than painkillers.

^I'm a damned difficult case because I have the anxiety and the cognitive style, and my work and strengths are built on them. It's always hard to know where the line between a strength and a burden lies. I tend to get infections and inflammation now when I've overdone it, so that helps keep me in line.

But I always listen to you, don't worry. You are much more of a role model than you know.

If Skids is a bit like me, he can use the downtime to also give his mind a break. I've experienced this on two occasions when being knocked down by serious infections and put in hospital. The weird thing was in the midst of the seriousness, I genuinely found mental rest.

Yes, you're right in this assumption. I have to keep moving or doing something or I go nuts.
It's just gone 0600 here, I've been up since 0345, walked the dog, put the pool cleaner in, changed the flag (aussie to pies) and been researching some asx shares after analysing the US stock moves last night.

I just can't fathom how i'll be incapacitated for a period of weeks, maybe months... I guess I'll have to learn

^Skids, one idea is to pick a couple of topics you've always been interested in and order a few good reads or get a couple of good subscriptions.

AI is obviously the big thing at the moment. Have you played around with ChatGPT and its many spinoff utlitities? There's a heap of stuff out including some fun new image and video AI. Aside from ChatGPT, Microsoft probably has the best formal product offerings, but there are new free tools out every other day at the moment.

I know you invest, and the market is definitely interesting at the moment. A Bloomberg subscription can go far as they chase the market openings and news across time zones, so you can watch it all day. E.g., these two articles I used in some work last week anticipate a shift in paradigm as central banks go back to focusing on inflation now they no longer fear deflation:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newslett ... onomics-v2

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... in-markets

Also, AI is being used in investing, so getting a handle on how would make for a good angle on AI.

This lecture series by Robert Sapolsky is the best thing since sliced bread on human behaviour and cognitive science. It's over 10 years old now but I've not watched anything better before or since: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNnIGh9 ... 68C90DDC3D

It's not only brilliant, but it's also an entertaining watch.

The big universities often have amazing channels. Good examples are UCTV (https://www.uctv.tv/), LSE events (https://www.lse.ac.uk/events/search-eve ... 2023-06-03), and MIT Open Courseware (https://ocw.mit.edu/search/?f=Lecture%2 ... _coursenum).

I reckon it's helpful to pick a couple of areas that really interest you outside the normal heated political talk, otherwise you'll end up chasing the news cycle. Let me know if there's anything you've always been interested in but have never had the downtime to focus on and I'll see what I can come up with.

I'm working on AI and its implications for careers and the economy at the moment.

Ah cool, cheers for that.

Roman History is something that interests me, but haven't got into any great depths in.
Weather. I picked up the interest in this when surfing as a young fella. No beach cams or surf reports back in the 70's & 80's.
I freaked a guy out at work a while ago, he was heading up to Kalbarri for a surfing holiday so I delved into the maps and charts, told him to be ready for the best waves on the Wednesday & Thursday. When he got back he was amazed that I'd nailed it. 8)
