From watching the Roos last week against Melbourne, it's clear they have a lot of weaknesses in their side. One of these being their forward structure, if Presti returns this week they're going to struggle to kick goals against us.
They also struggled to move the ball past the centre line when trying to clear out of defence so we need to keep the pressure on them for 4 qtrs and keep the ball in our half.
We need to maintain the intensity we showed last week but the skills need to improve and we need to make the most of our opportunities. No missing easy shots at goal and no silly mistakes.
Hopefully this will be the big win we've been waiting for to get some confidence back and to start working on that percentage. Pies by 40 points.

I think you are all underestimating the roos. I think we will win, but only by around 10 points. Until we can get some decent supply to our forwards and our forwards can kick straight we won't win comfortably over any team. We have to start kicking more than 12 or 13 goals a game.
Having said that, if we get burns and fraser back, it should help the midfield to get back some functionality and hopefully plenty of the ball in our foward half. I would leave Richards to do the bulk of the ruck work and use fraser in the forward line to hopefully help kick a winning score.
There have been some good signs from Woey, Lica and cheesy, hopefully they can continue.

Punk is correct. Two weeks ago, North handed Port their biggest hiding since they joined the AFL, so this is not going to be easy.
Johnno mentioned Drew Petrie but I would worry more about Adam Simpson. One of the classiest midfielders in the competition, earning a truckload of possessions each week and using almost all of them effectively. A clear cut opportunity for Licca to show what he's made of to play the run-with role whilst picking up a stack of possessions himself. Brent Harvey is also going to be a danger man. And Wells is so bloody quick, we might have to leg rope him!
Leigh Brown played a good game on Jeff White but North were caught between playing him in the ruck and filling a hole in defence. If Fraser comes back, he and Richards will have a golden opportunity to run Brown into the ground and give our guys first use of the ball.
Clearly, North are weak on tall backmen, so there's an opportunity for us to exploit this with 3 or 4 talls in our forward line - Taz, Rocca, C Cloke, and Fraser when not in the ruck - so, if the rucks win first use of the ball and our midfielders kick long into the forward line, we will create stacks of opportunities. I can see Taz and Rocca easily taking 15 marks each if delivery is good.
I think we'll be best starting something similar to last week in our own backline. A lovely balance of talls and runners capable of moving the ball upfield quickly.
Several posts in other threads have been suggesting the use of Lonie on a wing for some time, which I strongly agree with, and I think this is MM's chance to deploy him there for a whole game. In fact, I'd suggest Johnno move up onto the other wing to take advantage of his long kicking as well and move Woey to a half-forward flank, so we get as much speed up as possible across the middle of the ground.

Go you mighty Magpies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What we really need is improvement in defence.
Our players have lost confidence in their ability to read the play and run through the lines. I have seen it on numerous occasions this year, a player runs forward, stops looks to give a handball backwards, no one there, has to run and kick dangerously across goal causing me to lose another 15 minutes of my life.
Our boys need to get more confidence in their ability to win contests against opposition players. We did it for the last 2 seasons and when everyone thought that our defence was a bunch of "no-namers" but managed to form one of the best defensive structures in the competition.
That said, Rocca also needs to pull his finger out and do something, anything! Maybe playing against his brother will help!

BTW We will win the flag this year.

The Kangas have been unpredictable this year, so it is hard to say how we will go. Simpson, Grant, Harvey and Petrie all need to be stopped if we are to win. Tarrant showed great form last week with 5 goals and in the past 2 meetings against the Roos he has performed well. If we apply the pressure like we did last week against Adelaide we should win. Our forward line is strong, compared to their backline which is their weak link.
As stand in captain at the moment, Rocca needs to lift and have a big game. He has been inconsistent this year and hasn't been anywhere near the form he was in at the start of last year.
Pies to win by 18pts in a tough match.

North are a very even, well disciplined side. They are not overly flashey or talented but there will give you 100% each week and when your down like we are it's never going to be an easy victory.
For us to get up in this one it simply comes down to our forward line and midfield disposal. Ever since the Port game our backline has been fucntioning very well and whilst the midfield is getting plenty of clearances and plennty of the ball their disposal has been B grade at best.
Taz has found form, it's now time for Rocca. Fraser should slot onto that HFF very nicely and cause a few headaches as Stretch should hold down the ruck pretty much all day.
Lets hope Burns and Lockyers disposal is better than that of O'Brees and McGoughs.
Pies really should win, but it definitely won't be easy.

Great Post Canibal & D9, you guys should be on the coaching committe.
Lockyer could not play 4 solid quarters. Use him off the bench after the pace drops off the game if he comes in. I feel they may prefer him to have at least another week in the VFL.
Harvey was the highest possession getter the last time we met.
It's going to be interesting.

I won't be at all surprised if we get pumped by 10 goals. We just haven't played with anything near the cohesion and commitment that the shinboners show. It will get ugly again on the weekend on here.
Forget about Petrie, like Cannibal said its Simpson, but also Grant & Harvey that may tear us to shreds. I hope I am wrong, but there's no way I can tip the Pies this weekend.

To some degree I agree with Cam.
The Pies at the moment lack Cohesion. To a large degree this is due to a lack of faith. Players seem to prefer waiting till a recognizedd player is free than to kick to a second or third tier player who is free and in good position. If a recognized player is not clear, they will kick to them anyway rather than to an unrecognized player in the clear. Last week R. Shaw was the clearest example of this. Several times he was clear and in good position but players refused to kick to him.
This causes an unnecessary number of contests, slows us down while waiting for recognized players to become available and discourages "fringe" players from running to or kicking to good positions.
It also means that the opposition only has to worry about manning up on our guns. Thus they are free to double and triple team Rocca and Tarrant free of any worries that the unmanned players will be kicked to.
Under such circumstances, the only viable strategy is a man on man approach as against Adelaide. This approach, tends to produce low scoring, slow and ugly games - lots of contests but little free tearaway plays. It sometimes works, but against a highly disciplined team with perseverance is unlikely to do so - If you marginally win the 50/50 contests in a man on man game but concede 5 or 6 goals to quick breaks, you lose.
It is not a long term game plan. However if it works several times in the next few weeks, it may have served its purpose. After that, barring further injury we should have our current list plus Burns, Presti, Fraser, Buckley, Holland and Lockyer available.
By round 13, if we are 4/9, it will be interesting what approach is taken to the rest of the season - further development or maximizing the number of wins.
