Is it time to raid the sinking ships?

Does anyone of value want to get out of North or Essendon while they still have 100+ games left in them?

Will Dodoro trade players? Or is his reputation a part of the problem at Essendon? That being that he is more than impossible to talk with. He refuses all trade requests and submits outlandish ones in return. Is that why other clubs traded around them to get the players he wanted last year? Namely Josh Sinn and Arlo Draper.

Cant see this happening in a million years, but Sam Draper (23) and Peter Wright (25) are out of contract next year. Those two solve a couple of big issues on our list, especially if Grundy was to be traded. It'd take some offer for Essendon to accept. But could either player be convinced that this is the place to be?

Heppell is probably too old and a little bit passed it now to consider, but gees it's be sweet to see him accept his Anzac Medal against his old side.

Unbelievably, James Stewart is gettable again. We've seen many threads on him in the past. At 199cm and 28 years of age, it's not the worst idea, but can his body hold up?

Aaron Francis was once a player I thought could come in and take over Howes position in the team. He has the leap, but does he have anything else? Could he actually play that defensive role like Howe can?

There is, dare I say it, the small question of Ben Cunnington.

Earlier this year it was reported we were into Griffen Logue from the Dockers. He is 24, key position and plays both ends of the ground. If it were he or McStay, Logue is nearing his prime and will be a much better long term prospect. Don't know if we're still interested, but he is a very good player.

What are peoples thoughts on Alex Keith? Seems to have fallen down the pecking order at the Bulldogs.
Is a quality key defender.
Will be 31 at the start of next season (OK, a tad old, but would be two years younger than Robbie Tarrant when he went to Richmond)
Would give us a couple years until we develop someone to replace him.
Would be about $400,000 a year cheaper than McStay
Very gettable I think.

I’d give Robbie Gray a spot if he was interested.

Was also a brilliant cricketer who most likely would have played tests. Would only seriously consider him at Collingwood if the club is convinced that we can win a flag with him in the next 2 years. Otherwise pass.

I think you will find the rise and rise of Murphy, the likely backup of Will Kelly and Charlie Dean...means the pressing need for a defender has eased. While the glaring lack of a key forward is costing us scores weekly.

I think also Taranto is of key importance to the club...Adams is not getting any younger...De Goey still may not yet be at the club next year...also he is yet to have played a full season without injury (a concern).

We need an extra explosive in and under style mid.

Players of interest are:

Key Position Forwards:
Nick Larkey (North)
Peter Wright (Essendon)

Midfield:
Tim Taranto (GWS)
Jacob Hopper (GWS)

Key Position Defenders:
Ben McKay (North)
Griffin Logue (Freo)

Ruck:
Sam Draper (Essendon)

Other Positions:
Ian "Bobby" Hill (Small Forward)
Cameron Zurhaar (Medium Forward)
Ed Richards (Small Defender) Yeah, I know.

I feel like Taranto and Hill are a big chance of becoming Pies in 2023. I can't see us also being able to get Hopper. North players here really fill a need, but they wouldn't be easy trades. Essendon won't be trading Wright/Draper, I'm dreaming, but geez they'd make us a great side. And geez wouldnt that soften the blow of letting Grundy go!

Forget about Jaidyn Stephenson, Sam Weideman and James Stewart.

I really want to, but is almost 32; Ben Cunnington.
I really want to, but is almost 36; Lance Franklin.

Need convincing on Aaron Francis. I just feel like there's a good player hidden in him somewhere. Does anyone else see it?

McStay is the obvious free agent. Karl Amon is interesting but probably not for us. Would Jayden Hunt look good in a black and white headband?

Tradable assets at this point are:
Brodie Grundy. This one changes everything.
Caleb Poulter. Both SA clubs interested.
Arlo Draper. Because I've heard that the "go home factor" is a thing here.
Our first round pick will be in the mid to late teens depending on how far we go. And we have a few third rounders, but no second rounders.

There's a bit to work with there, but I dont see how we can get all the pieces we need. Especially if we trade Grundy and dont bring in another decent ruck.

Another great write up/summary Presti35.

Larkey and Wright answers one of our/fans big pieces, but I can't see Norff or Bummers giving them up or trading with us, same goes with Mckay, if they get Clarko, they will want to keep their best talent.

Logue... haven't watched many Freo games but hes played 18 games but his stats aren't jumping off the page, but if he stops his opponent, who cares right?? He's 24 listed at 194cm and 98kg, wish he was 200cm lol, he can be used forward as well I think. Purely based on stats, he's un upgrade on Murph I suppose (maybe thats harsh on him lol). And he was pick #8 in his draft.

Would love Taranto or Hopper, apparently the cats are right into Hopper, and its between Tigs and us for Taranto... both bolsters our midfield options.

If we get one of these, will be interesting to see what happens to the younger mids on the list.

I wouldn't be against getting Francis... would be depth/ Howe like replacement? I remember at some point (maybe last year??) he was in great form. Only played 4 games in a disappointing bummers year. But hey, new club can mean better player!

Would like a Bobby Hill in the team, quick, skilful brings excitement.

McStay coming in as reported, again, would be interesting to see what happens to the list, as we recruited Kruger and Dean, both are injured of course and we didn't get to see a lot of Kruger or any of Dean at AFL level.

I'm actually quite excited for this off season!

Speculation this morning about Billy Frampton from the Crows. Could he be the additional backup ruck/forward in the event that Grundy leaves? Probably get him for next to nothing.

I am not saying he's a great player, but he is the type of multi purpose big man who could provide cover to our current setup and buy some time for Begg to develop more??

Remember - we need role players to compliment the stars... Maybe he comes on a three year deal for not much and ends up playing a handful of games - but provides important depth. Maybe he has more potential than we have seen and a coaching group with strong development skills get more out of him (we see this a lot with ruckmen I reckon - they are crap until they're 27 - then they change club and become important contributors).
It's never as good/nor bad as it seems...

I felt all along IF ( ! ) Grundy was to be traded, we would need another 200cm player on our list. Frampton is an interesting one. There was a game earlier in the season where he was close to best on the ground but that didn’t turn into much more as the weeks rolled on. Think he played most of that game in defence.
I suspect Collingwood won’t be looking for a ruckman who specialises in tap outs but more someone around 200cm who can halve ruck contests and then allow a beefed up mid field group to get first hands on the ball more often

Cal Twomey has reported that Tigs have edged ahead of the Pies for Taranto, while Tim Watson said he has heard that Tigs have got Taranto. And Cats are favourites for Hopper...
