Feels like winger has become a genuine specialist position again the way the game is played these days.
Ironically, we could have had an Ed Langdon type running beast in Ed Langdon, save for Hines' usual ineptitude; this time 2014 draft.

3 48 Matthew Goodyear Collingwood Calder Cannons TAC Cup

3 54 Ed Langdon Fremantle Sandringham Dragons TAC Cup

What a star Goodyear turned out to be; another epic fail.

Or weren't we into collecting brothers at this point, unless they were sons of Premiership playing fathers?

The lets change the rules if Collingwood seem to have an advantage.

- James Clement on Hird (hands in the back rule) 2006
- Clamp down on Interchange after 2010 (brought in a sub vest for the 4th man on the bench)
- Introduce a soft cap after Collingwood went to the USA every off season
- Changing the high tackle rule not after 15 years of selwood but 1 year of Ginnivan

A mate of mine knows the Taranto family, and he reckons they are Pies supporters. Not sure that means anything, but it's something I guess.

Not too sure that means much these days. I can recall heaps of players who were Collingwood fans but ended up elsewhere, Dipper, Brereton, Brayshaw, Petracca etc. Sure there are plenty of others over the years.

Brolazza, yes Stewart Loewe another duffle coat wearing Pies fan from the Peninsula, who ended up elsewhere [St.Vomit].

But that's how it was back then - you were zoned to certain teams residentially, in the years prior to draft. i.e. carlton got Bendigo, st.vomit got Ballarat etc.
Don't think that was a perfect science either - Gavin Brown [Templestowe] should have ended up at Fitzroy, by that logic...

Then the draft was devised in 1986, prior to the first year of expanded comp in 1987. Not a bad thing, as it stifled carlton's buying sprees, and kept them to 2 flags in that period, even if they were over the cap in the process too.

DeadEyeDidak wrote:Pies supporters - get your head around Grundy potentially not being in the black and white in 2023.

Mature conversations will be had about exploring the best "Football" situation for Grundy for 2023 and beyond.

He may well stay at Collingwood in 2023 but he'll do so knowing he isn't guaranteed the #1 ruck role OR a position in the side.

i call bullshit, Grundy will stay, why would he leave, hes on a fantastic long term contract, and is very happy at the club, as many in the media have confirmed. He knows the Pies premiership window is opening, and he wants to be part of that. Same as de goey, the club needs him back firing for the finals, as if they are telling him to look elsewhere now, as we are on the verge of a big finals campaign, its utter crap, Fly would never allow any of this rumour mongering shit to be going on, as he needs a totally united team for the finals. :o

GW preference is as follows:

- Trade Grundy & keep De Goey on a reduced deal (2x650-700 + 2 years)

However as Grundy has 5 years remaining on his deal he is technically able to dig his heels in.

This is where it becomes difficult for GW and the lever of not being able to guarantee BG's place in the team in 2023 could be pulled to help move BG on.

I'd love to see the club keep all our stars and recruit other stars to join our club but the reality of salary caps makes that hard to achieve.
Unfortunately I think the club has made the decision that Jordan DeGoey has been told, either directly or indirectly that if he is to stay at the club it will be on Collingwoods terms at a reduced salary and given he is a free agent at the end of this year he is free to explore his options. The harsh reality is that Jordan and his management appear to be focusing on getting the top dollar available and it is likely that St.Kilda, who are desperate to remain relevant, will risk the farm to land a potential A Grader to help them achieve success in the short term. Geelong will probably have Selwood retire at the end of this year to give them the cap space to fit DeGoey in on a good price and get an upgrade in terms of replacing Selwood with another ready made star. Even Richmond could be another club to offer DeGoey a fat contract if they loose Cotchin to retirement and Martin goes to Sydney. West Coast might have plenty of salary cap space available, and they can offer lots of corporate "support" to enhance their offer. The only issue to hold back the offers from these clubs is if they are spooked by the so-called risk of DeGoey's history of behavior at Collingwood, but I think that is unlikely to be a concern for them or any other AFL club, as all clubs, including Collingwood, think their culture will turn any naughty party boys around to be a solid citizen at their club and the brighter the talent the more buyers forgive & forget about past bad behavior.
In my dream world, Jordan DeGoey would recognize the support Collingwood has given him and his love of the club and mates he has there would have him turn his back on a bigger $ contract at opposition clubs and stay with the Pies to be a one club player that makes a significant contribution to winning multiple premierships at Collingwood with the current team. Unfortunately I'm beginning to doubt that Degoey's dreams match mine.
The recent rumour's of Collingwood being all in to Tim Taranto only makes me feel it more likely DeGoey is on the way out as Taranto is probably as good as replacement for DeGoey as there is going around at the moment.
As for all the talk about Grundy's future, I hope it is all nonsense and I really hope Grundy comes back to play with both Cameron and Cox in the team with Cameron playing mostly forward as the marking forward leaving Grundy to do the majority of the ruck work with help from Cox who would swing through the forward line and interchange. Whilst the idea of playing three "ruckmen" may unbalance the team the idea tantalizes me to have our three marking talls rip the opposition defense apart in the dry warm clear weather of September!! :D
As far as recruiting of Taranto and McStay goes, I hope the upcoming retirements of Pendlebury, Howe and Sidebottom together with Elliot and maybe Cox by 2024 /25 allows Collingwood the room in our salary cap to fit these two into the squad but of the two I'd prefer Taranto if only one can be afforded.
