The ball actually came out and Walker could have easily picked it up himself. But he chose to hold the ball to Ginnivan’s ankles instead to win the free kick,He effectively won the free kick by cheating and the umpires obliged him. What'sinaname wrote:stui magpie wrote:

Doesn't matter. As soon as you dive for the ball, you HAVE to get rid of it. If you can't, even if you drop the football or someone else grabs it, you're done for HTB.
Difficult to get rid of it when it's in Taylor Walker's handsWhat'sinaname wrote:Ginnivan dived for the ball and didn't get rid of it. That's my interpretation for the HTB decision. There was another one, I can't remember exactly.David wrote:I don’t usually have a go at the umpires and I don’t believe in any anti-Collingwood agenda, but I do think there’s an anti-Ginnivan agenda. That holding the ball free against him was one of the most disgraceful decisions I’ve ever seen. Should have been a free against Walker if anything.
Usually, I say, sure, that's the rule, but in the wet, it seems a bit crazy to be penalising the player going for the ball.
Thankfully, the umpires were lenient on the kicking in danger. There were quite a few hacks at the ball with the foot that in most other games would have been paid as a kicking in danger.
I love the Pies, hate Carlscum
<snip> Never seen another player get done for that. There’s rules for the league and there’s rules for Ginni. Browne needs to front the AFL and say really what the ****!?What'sinaname wrote:stui magpie wrote:

Yep, but that's the rule. As soon as you dive on the ball, you have to get rid of it through a legal disposal, otherwise it's holding the ball. Ginni didn't get rid of it after diving on the ball, ergo, holding the ball.doriswilgus wrote:The ball actually came out and Walker could have easily picked it up himself. But he chose to hold the ball to Ginnivan’s ankles instead to win the free kick,He effectively won the free kick by cheating and the umpires obliged him. What'sinaname wrote:stui magpie wrote:

"Diving on the ball" surely entails actually making contact with it at some stage. Whatever he was trying to do, he never had it.

Look at the footage at 12:55 to go in the last, Ginni dives onto the ball. Sure he never takes full possession, but the ball ends up under his legs. So, no surprise that the umpire pays it HTB.
As I said earlier, in the wet, I would prefer the umpire to let these go, but they are paid pretty much every week.

Watching for the first time today more objectively now knowing we won so no emotion. I’ll let you know my opinion. So far: 1/4 time, has been ok. The Ginnivan rule is clearly a thing but IMO the kid should just learn to play the game than try and draw frees.
The match day thread is for unfiltered BS knee jerk reactions. The time for level headed comment comes after.

No sorry Whatsinaname… At no stage was the ball ‘under his legs’.
Have a look in real time again and then the slow-mo replay after.
The ball clearly went through Ginny’s legs and behind him as soon as he went to ground. The ball was ‘clear’ as required by the rule quoted above and it was Walker that did everything to hold it in.
The ump was well positioned and ignored the fact that Walker had possession. In fact, in the lottery that is modern umpiring it could have been paid holding the ball against Walker who clearly had possession and was not knocking the ball clear, or even a trip against him as he was grabbing Ginny around the legs…
