I believe the contract was front loaded a fair bit, so it might not be so bad for a potential suitor - might not be $1M… it may be $750k, for example.

For all we know, he may have received $1.3 - $1.5 in the first few years?

The way things are, I'd say we have 5 or 6 current best-22 that won't be around when we're genuinely ready for a crack at it, and need to fill a bit of talent in.
In saying that, if we can pick up some cheapies (ie for 2nd/3rd round picks) that serve a need, then I'm all for it!
Which begs the question. WHY get rid of DeGoey and make that 6 or7 we won’t have when the time comes? I understand he is not consistent but we’ll spend years looking for something close to him. Poulter wants home to SA so perhaps with the Brown brothers highly unlikely to figure in the top team a deal could be formulated with draft picks and players for Fogarty. McStay may not be an option after his last outing.

My understanding was he was on a $7 m deal over 7 yrs, but it was front-end loaded, meaning he was on more than $1 m pa for the first couple of years and may well be on less than that now.

It has been stated a few times that Poulter is 'homesick'.
Has the player ever said this??

He is one that I would be very keen to retain- he has a lot of skills and at 193 cms is the tall winger that might replace Sidey when he retires.

McRae, McInnes, Poulter, Harrison, N.Daicos, McCreery, Bianco, Begg, Brown T. Brown C., Carmichael Murley and Chugg are all young lads who each may have a role to play in our 'Next Gen' midfield.

If Poulter were to go, I would like Fogarty to be part of any deal-

Sounded like he was just offering a hypothetical example to me.

Yeah would love it too, but given how well Fogarty is playing now, he has had a real break out last few months.... I don't think Adelaide would let him go. I also don't think Poulter has any real value in a market sense, your right...on potential we should probably try and retain him.

Just look at Murphy...start of the year many posters on here had him as delisted by seasons end...he is now a firm lock best 22 player. I really hope the club gives Will Kelly a shot before seasons end...still only 21 and with so much to offer at both ends of the ground. Just needs that break out game to feel like he belongs ...I think anyway

Would love Poulter to develop into a Hosko/Ed Langdon type running beast who could patrol up and down the wing for a decade. Not sure he has shown anything to suggest this could be the case - but I like the idea of having a player of that style in our team. Feels like winger has become a genuine specialist position again the way the game is played these days.
It's never as good/nor bad as it seems...

Isn’t it great to see the wingman back with Sidey and hosk! Feels like I’ve gone back in time watching them.

A little birdie told me the club won’t be overly upset if JDG leaves the club
The club has shifted its focus away from Bobby Hill (we were into him in a big way last off season) and turned it to Taranto
He is 2 years younger plays the same role as JDG and comes without the off field dramas
He’s a big body mid who according to reports is a impeccable trainer and excellent around the group
He also comes at much cheaper rate than JDG
Reports JDG is seeking north of $850k a season with extras built in bringing him closer to the million mark
Taranto is getable for closer to $650k (around what we currently pay JDG and Sidey)
Don’t think the JDG deal to St Kilda is a done deal like the media think
North are armed with loads of cash and want a big body mid to work with Horne Francis
I’m hearing north would be prepared to pay him north of a million a season for 5 or 6 years which put his compensation pick to us closer to 6 or 7 if I did my home work right
If we do get McStay and it’s a big IF we won’t be paying him anything near what the media is reporting it’s the length of the deal more so
The Lions offer is apparently 3 years at $400k ours will be 4 or 5 years around the same coin
Wright is way smarter than Ned Guy in negotiating and won’t be paying overs for any player like we have in the past

Thanks Q67. You've put my mind at ease. It sounds like Wright has things well in order. While I am an admirer of JDG, given his off-field troubles, he is in no position to be asking for a pay rise. Regarding McStay, he doesn't interest me much, but I trust our footy department to judge his worth to us. Whatever eventuates, I reckon we'll be a stronger team next year.

Rude I think we are interested but at our price
He can play either end and could he considered a stop gap/back up to replace Roughhead while others develop ?
Wright is very clever we have some wriggle room in our cap despite what some think
It’s not totally repaired but it’s in better shape now than it was
If JDG left and we brought in Taranto cap wise we are neutral
I think the club is planning or expect there to be 1 retirement (other than Roughhead) from our remaining senior players this year
Right now all those 30+ are easily in our best 22 but thst doesn’t mean one will want to push on again or that the club may a tough call and move one on
I’m confident Wright and McRae are very aligned in how we proceed over next couple years with senior players retiring and how we maintain our list reset/rebuild
