I imagine it went along the lines of "we need you to play out your career in the midfield for us as that's where you're at your best and that's where your leadership will be most needed. Luckily you've never depended on speed, and your skills and decision-making are as sharp as ever. As a veteran we are fortunate that only half your salary is counted in our salary cap, so that's good for you as well as the club."Macattacks wrote:I imagine it went along the lines of we need to play the young guys in the guts and save as much money as possible, neither great news for Pendles but he'd understand the reality better than mostBazBoy wrote:On 360 McRae admitted he and Pendles had a chat as part of the coach/ player interview and when pressed said he would keep what was discussed between he and Pendles till later

About to turn 34, if he didn't find another role he would be one of the very few, even Hodge had to go backRudeBoy wrote:

My insider at Pies telling me Pendles to sign on for 2 years as a player and then a succsession plan to be implemented to replace McRae
Bloody hell where did that come from. Bloke ain’t coached one game yet and he hands over the job
Tell me it’s not true

Pretty sure the 50% veterans bonus has gone the way of the dodo. Might still be a fixed $$ discount but I'm not 100% sure if even that remains.RudeBoy wrote:I imagine it went along the lines of "we need you to play out your career in the midfield for us as that's where you're at your best and that's where your leadership will be most needed. Agree. I am sure Craig was heavily involved in making this happen quickly. He understands the value and power of a role model like Pendles, plus his incredible wealth of experience and mastery of all skills in the game.MJ23 wrote:Another sign the McRae is the right bloke for the job.jackcass wrote:Seems Pendles will get his 2 year extension....

By next year, half our list will have played well short of 50 senior AFL games. I cannot think of a better mentor and teacher to have beside these kids for some on the job learning. The real learning is done on the ground, not in front of a white board or in the weights room. Part of McRaes conversation would be about managing his body through a second year. They may plan to rest him occasionally from now on, which is fine as long as those conversations are transparent and unambiguous.

Don't confuse your current path with your final destination. Just because it's dark and stormy now doesn't meant that you aren't headed for glorious sunshine!
This really irkes me when we see clean air and this poison comes into public veiw
No I don’t believe it and would love to have those faceless muckrakers dealt with in some way
Craig you are there by virtue of a strong search process and we are with you

Veterans’ allowance has been scrapped. Think it was pulled around 2017 and clubs were compensated in their overall cap by the benefit ($127k) * average veterans across the league. Might have been about $400k per club.
Probably more likely to have negotiated Pendles like Mayne…offer an additional year of contract (on top of 1 base) in return for a discounted rate e.g instead of $800 k for 1 year, pay $1.2m for 2 ($600k per year average).

I understand your position. however, we should never have been even slightly reluctant to negotiate a 2 year deal with him. Not just because he is such a champion and legend of our club. Also because he is absolutely a required player for us over the next 2 years, due to the lack of experience on our list, and what he can offer this young group in terms of his attitude modelling of commitment, his wealth of knowledge, and the guidance he will be able to provide.
Who knows what happened? One can say that he should have kept it quiet and spoken privately to the club. Perhaps he did that, and got no satisfactory response?
I just think that the way that Craig McRae handled the topic of Pendles in his first interview as our coach was masterclass. Pendles had done enough to decide his own destiny over the next 2 years, according to Craig, whether he remains captain or not. It was a very powerful stand to take, which will give Pendles huge confidence in the new coach. It will help to cement what will be an extremely important relationship going forward, between Pendles and McCrae.
