And it will take a clean slate, and total overhaul of board, down to coaching staff, to rebuild club morale from scratch; not dissimilar to what we endured in 1998/1999 with the changing of the guard.

Pies2016 could it work as such
Daicos gets called #1 or #2 we match the bid with father son discount and he becomes a magpie (which is going to happen no matter what)
So the deal is done and final then we get back into the draft via doing a deal (prearranged) with say Adelaide trading Maynard for say a live 2nd round pick (around 22) and a 3rd round pick or future 2nd round in 2022 ?
Yes I know there’s rules in place but can’t deals be done on the “night”
This in my mind works if Maynard really wants out we can’t force him to stay players have power really
Of could we send both Grundy and Maynard to Adelaide for 2x second round picks this year and 2022 1st round pick but they must take up all Grundy salary ?
If we are going to rebuild then we won’t need a million dollar ruckman
Half the teams in the competition don’t have a ruckman worth a pinch of salt the way the games played now mids feed off others teams rucks

And Grundy isnt just a Ruck - he"s another Mid. Thats what makes him valuable. Cats found out how valuable Gawn was on the weekend.

How many times I read what’s you saying it always comes back to me that what it translates to is we pick up a gun in Nick Daicos and lose a gun in Maynard. How exactly does that improve us as a football team next year? This is just folly. If Maynard wants to leave and we don’t know if he does or doesn’t then I’m sure the new coach can convince him to stay.

As MJ23 said, we can’t trade players on the night of the draft.
The only action that occurs on the night is swapping of picks between clubs.
By the time we match the Daicos bid, we would have nothing left to remain involved in any serious additional drafting ( unless of course we had already traded out a quality player during the trade period )
However, if we really wanted to buy back into the draft on the night, we can always swap our future picks as part of the action. RIGHT NOW our future first rounder ( 2022 ) stands as our biggest currency in the coming draft / trade period. Whether the club go that way or not, time will tell. The difference with the 2022 future first rounder is that everyone knows we will be rubbish, so we would get a great return if we were to trade it out. ( I’m not against that strategy but that’s a different conversation )
I think what’s lost in all this negativity about having nothing left after we match the Daicos bid is that we still have first crack at Dibb at a heavily reduced draft “ cost “. We also secured Aiden Begg in the mid season draft and he would have been selected at some point in the upcoming National draft.
So we go to this draft in the knowledge of already being guaranteed access to the best U19 footballer in the country, a K P F prospect and a bargain basement later pick selection if the cards fall our way.
It’s not a bad start when you think we dont have any decent picks right now.

The fact is that we need to be very bold in restructuring our list
As much as I would like Maynard to stay, if he wants to go and we are compensated adequately then I think it is not a bad idea.

People including so called experts forget the mid season pick up of Begg. I beleive He'd be a late first rounder in this draft. Dibb has also shown a whole heap this year and is now an exciting prospect. Id be stoked if we bring in Daicos, Dibb and keep next years first.

We simply can't afford to keep trading out high end draft picks. I get why we traded out this years first rounder. The value has been the real loss.

As Essendon and Port haven displayed, be bold and buy in enough first round picks in the right draft..you can almost rebuild in one draft!!!.

I was dumb struck last year with the number of players Essendon let go...but look at the result.

Umm, is that not what we did do last draft?
I mean the kids we brought in all still look good - 3 kids in the top 24 picked. And that doesn't include Poulter, McMahn or McCreery.
We will have a top 5 talent this year - so another first round pick and Hopefully Dibb is not bid on in the first round.

Fear not, Dibb will definitely be there long after the first round has been completed. People got excited about him because Twomey keeps picking him in the back pocket in his best U19 team. He’s nowhere near in the best twenty players in the country and nobody is going to invest their early picks on a diminutive nuggety back pocket. He’s a reasonable talent but he’s still got a long way to go. The real bonus for us will be if he is called out after pick 40 under the new diluted N G A rules. Then we would go close to getting him for nothing.
