It's time.
Yes, time for Pendles to hand it over now, and take a rest, no pressure on him, let him see out his last season, in a new position, maybe run him in the forward line a bit, hes been dying for a rest for yrs, to quote the movie Teh Club. He will make an excellent Assistant Coach for us down the track.

no he should go elsewhere to learn his craft. Both Collingwood and Pendlebury will be better for it.

Needs a clean break from past to future
Appoint coach and ask Pendles to step down
Support Pendlebury in his decision to stay or go, IMO he needs to go to a club that will offer role transitioning to assistant coach

This is what a professional, well-run football department would do.
Whilst this seems to upset many people it gives me some hope for our future.
I think it is also perfectly reasonable for Pendles to ask for a two year extension with all the blood, sweat and tears he has shed for Collingwood. Pendles could easily join the few other current AFL players in their early to mid thirties. A professional club should be able to handle this. However the damage already inflicted by the dumb overs paid to Grundy is the trigger that makes other players ask for more $. Collingwood has made it’s own bed of thorns and now have to deal with the past mistakes. If so many Nicksters saw the danger in paying so much for Grundy, how come the club didn’t? That my friend is utter incompetence.
No, utter incompetence is making the same mistake again. Pendles gets 1 year. If he doesn't like it and finds a better deal, then that's fine too.

I would add...Collingwood should have a clause that no former Collingwood player can come back to the club in a coaching capacity until they have done minimum 10 years at another club ideally clubs.
This would actually be a really good rule in general for all clubs

Bucks and Pendles to Tassie. Eddie bought a mansion in Hobart.
It’d be interesting to see how Bucks coaches elsewhere, without the weight of Collingwood history. I reckon he’d do well.

This is the one I would really like to see! Would be very tempted to support the Tasmanian "fire ants" !!!
I think everyone seems to have missed when he said it's close to being done for 1 more year,i think he meant after that if someone makes an offer for playing coaching

Spot on. Exactly the right thing to do.
Catch 22 situation. Sure by all means offer him a one year deal. However the most obvious and probable consequence will be that another club will immediately offer him a two year contract with a further carrot of becoming an assistant coach. An intelligent person like Pendles will grab the opportunity with both hands, and I wouldn’t blame him one bit. The other furphy is that he will return to Collingwood in some capacity. Why should he? This thinking is based on the issue discussed ad nauseam here that Buckley should have done an apprenticeship somewhere else before taking on the Collingwood coaching role. However if Pendles is happy with the club that gives him the opportunity to attain his goal of coaching, I cannot see any reason as to why he would return to Collingwood. The days of blind loyalty are gone and the minute he leaves Collingwood, he becomes a former player with no obligation to return in any capacity. So the simple equation is that Collingwood offer him a two year contract with the probability of appointing him as an assistant coach or deal with the consequences of losing a much loved and respected club legend for another club to benefit from all his expertise and invaluable experience. The ball is firmly in Collingwood’s court to make an informed choice on his future. My gut feeling is that we will lose Pendles and Collingwood will struggle for a few years before the future regime of players are good enough to enable Collingwood to make the finals again. Time will tell if I’m right.
Don't confuse your current path with your final destination. Just because it's dark and stormy now doesn't meant that you aren't headed for glorious sunshine!
Pretty sure Pendlebury is on the record as saying he doesn't want an assistant coach role at Collingwood and he wants to be free to explore that role outside the CFC bubble, which I think is a good attitude. And we can't offer him the role anyway until our new head coach is appointed
As for whether he would return later, the questions should be (at the time) do we want him back and does he want to come back. We already know champion players don't necessarily translate to premiership coaches so it shouldn't be an automatic appointment
I don't see any problem with offering him a 1 year deal at 34 years of age (2022 season). It's up to him to decide if he wants to start the transition to assistant coach now, or in a year or two. Not sure what the rush is there, don't doubt he'll get offers whenever he choses to go that way

Wont happen, hes at the end of his playing days, hes no Burgoyne, his form has dropped off, with age, its inevitable. He will play one more season with us, he wont go anywhere, just wants a bit more cash. He should hand over the Captaincy and take pressure off himself, as has happened at other teams, like the Hawks.
