For example the forwards can practice their goal kicking skills by repetitively taking shots at goals. However if a player arrives at an AFL club with defective kicking skills there's nothing the AFL coach can do about it

This seems rather contradictory to me... also the post you were responding to was about player motivation, parroting the Buckley mantra that’s it’s not [the senior coaches] job to motivate players. Which is highly debatable IMO.

I was talking about expecting AFL players to be self motivated when playing at this level. Of course the plethora of coaches can knock themselves out motivating any players with such needs but if they are not motivated by playing AFL, just WTF are they doing at an AFL club?

Unfortunately every workforce contains people who are not good at their job, not motivated, lazy, only in it for the money, beneficiaries of nepotism, living on past reputations, coasting, getting by on talent rather than hard work and so on. Why should the AFL be any different? In short, there probably just aren't enough players in the country of the required standard/work-ethic to supply 18 clubs, so you're going to get some gaps that get filled with what's on offer - especially in Victoria.

Even if there were, there are still going to be times when they need to be externally motivated whether that's due to personal issues, fatigue, injury, mental health or whatever. And there are going to be times when, individually or collectively as a team, they need to be motivated to "Lift!", to win a final, a last quarter, peg back a deficit or put in a respectable performance for their teammate's milestone game (hi West Coke!)

I think most people would agree part of the role of any coach is to get the best out of people, assist them to realise their potential and achieve their goals - so while I do understand the concept that people who are well-paid should put the required effort into their jobs, reality is that doesn't always happen and IMHO it's a cop-out for a senior coach, especially in sports, to say it's not his job to motivate players, just because he never needed that when he was a player himself

Because unlike in a workforce, such players are likely to be pissed off by the club.
