True, very similar too 1958, both times we were rank outsiders. The Deeees were going for 4 flags in a row, in 58, even had their big cake made before the game, -they had beaten us 11 times in a row- and it said on the cake, THE DEMONS FOUR FLAGS IN A ROW. Post game a Chef had to scrape the words off the cake, at their wake "celebration". ! Today must have been like that then.

The midfield was a key component to the victory. Pendles played his best game of the season and the way we nullified the influence of Oliver and Petracca was outstanding.
Lynch was the biggest surprise of the day. Competed really well against Gawn.
Melbourne's tackling pressure (43 tackles) was down compared to their usual average (62 tackles). In contrast, our tackling was around our average which demonstrates that if pressure drops off, a team can look weak.
Cameron and Mihocek both did well up forward after a few quiet weeks. I've been adamant that Cameron has a bright future ahead of him and we need to keep playing him ahead of Cox who's more than likely departing at seasons end.
Defence held up well again. Plenty of intercept marks from Moore and Roughead.
Very happy that Buckley ended his coaching tenure on a high.

That's okay Jezza. Who knows what the future has in store? I just hope Bucks gets some credit for teaching these boys how to defend, that’s all. .
Wonderful victory against the odds
One player who should be singled out for praise is Quaynor.
He obliterated Kozzie. Quaynor was very fumbly last week but he was superb today.
I sense this win and the bye will set us up for a better run home.
There will be some belief and it will be interesting to see how Harvey maintains the rage.

Yes, in my comments I have not yet acknowledged our defence. It was yet again fantastic. Moore and Roughhead took so many intercept marks, and IQ in the second half also took some telling marks up the ground. IQ blanketed Cozzy as well. John Noble made was brilliant on many occasions as well with his aggressive run from half back. Noble and IQ will provide us with a fantastic springboard of half back into the future.
And Maynard was back to his brilliant best. So great to see him full of confidence and energy again.

It was also very obvious that a few Melbourne players were a bit lazy with us getting quite players free inside 50 quite a few times throughout the game.
Might be a turnaround from a lot of Queens Birthday games where we've been the top side looking forward to the bye and they've stolen the win.
