Not up to it.
Face it - the Pies are not up to it.
It all started in pre season and has not improved in the last 9 weeks since the West Coast flogged us by 105 points.
MM and Buttifant got the conditioning timing completely wrong and now we are seeing the results. When you need to change it takes about 4 weeks to see the results. Bombers recognized it in the pre season and are now coming good - MM and DB should see it about August.
I am totally confused as to how the whole coaching staff can't see it - yesterday were all the symptoms of OVER TRAINING - fumbling, slow, lethargic and that the affects the skill levels as you cannot get moving.
Dockers should have won by 50+ we were flattered by the under 40 margin.
If MM and Buttifant train them the same way this week - Bombers by 90.

This game was an absolute embarrisment. The team doesn't seem to care if they lose. They haven't cared all year.
There is no despiration, no tackling and the simple ball handling skills seem to have gone out the window.
If they don't get some heart before next week they will be smashed by 100 points plus. What makes this worse for me is that I have to catch the train from essendon station and walk past windy hill to get home!
I'm not looking forward to it.

JLC - I think they do but they need to know how to run.
I think they have spent too long on strength and very little on endurance until about 10 days ago and the the endurance work has been overloaded and that is why they looked very OVERTRAINED against the Dockers.
Lethargic, fumbling the ball, bad skills all are the symptoms of being overtrained.
This week they need a very light week of skills only.
You cannot turn it around overnight but Bombers saw it and caught it early - and now they are reaping the rewards.
Some players can handle it and other cannot at all (Lica and Presti).
C1 looks fine but needs to be left on the ground.
He was shafted by the umpires in the first quarter when he put his body in and was free kicked.
For a real good example fo how to play the Lions watch Kerr's game - top class effort and he won the game for the Eagles when he threw himslef in at the ball in the last quarter - Guts and Glory.

I don't think we are a physcially strong team or if we are we dont show it enough. Our tackling can be atrocious at times and we get outbodied too easily. That either means we are not strong enough or dont read the play well enough.

The Torres bounce is officially dead. You are walking alone now Fernando.

we appear to be physically strong enough, in terms of physique, but as has been observed by many, lethargic and slow. just because the players look strong i guess it doesn't necessarily mean that they are fit - in terms of cardio fitness and endurance. even so, would that explain why we are not running after the ball and going in hard for tackles? perhaps you're right - we aren't reading the play well enough...I don't think we are a physcially strong team or if we are we dont show it enough. an interesting quote i found from back in 99, in the forum about shaw leaving, broadie was spot on.Broadie wrote: If we can't land Sheedy or Pagan or Malthouse (my personal preference due to his proven ability to develop and mould young players) .
(After checking the nicks history page as mentioned in joels post)

Three simple words.... Brokern Heart muscle. The only players who showed any heart were the the newest players. Fraser is playing probably the most Cosistent football of is career and it is good football. Johnson outstanding. Everyone has said it but Williams should be treated like a mangy sheep dog who has had its day, and what was Rocca on? Running around pushing people over sooking missing from the square.... Rocca of Old? or Just Matthew Richardson? And throw a blanket over rest all as bad as each other.

Woewodin looked as though he couldn't give a stuff.....was jogging, giving up on a chase at one stage on the wing, the freo player saw this and decided to keep running and have a bounce, Woey had stopped to a jog. They would be deadset laughing at how bad we were !
He doesn't go in hard, won't chase, can't get a kick and his accountability is shocking. He is definately one who needs a run in the twos....bring in McGough for him, would be really surprised if he is nay worse !

Don't worry too much about the Fremantle game. They are good, very good. More of a worry is next week, and the Carlton game. If we lose both of those and against the likes of the Dees and Hawks then we will be getting a no.1 draft pick.
I can't believe the "we want mcGough back" chants.. hell, last year this time everyone and his dog were calling for his head.
Regarding our fitness... regarding everything really, i'm not getting too despondent, we'll know at round 11. Write us off then, although you may only need 13/14 wins to make the finals this year.

Extremely disappointing. Where is the spark, hunger and excitement in our team these days? As mentioned, it's not the losses that hurt the most - it's the way we are losing. I don't think we expect EVERY player to star EVERY week and we certainly don't expect young kids to come into the side and become champions overnight. Our injuries are a concern BUT WHERE ARE THE BASICS??? Where are the hard bumps and tough tackling? Why do our kicks rarely hit team-mates on the chest? What's with our shocking kicking at goal? Why can't we move the ball faster? Why aren't team-mates backing each other up and why do so many of our opponents run free (and usually in packs) so often?
I have no doubt our boys are trying but something's missing this season. It certainly doesn't help having injuries to key players BUT that shouldn't stop the guys out on the field still being fired-up and hungry for a win at any cost. I don't know where the spark and excitement and confidence has gone from our game but they are the first things I'd like to see back in our side - as once we have those I think the skills will automatically improve. It's definitely going to be a long season.
GO PIES!

Im worried about playing any teams that have a red hot go and that is pretty much most teams in the AFL (minus Richmond) but we have lost to them already. On current form we would lose to Carlton and would more than likely lose to Geelong as they play well against us normally. Adelaide we would beat in Melbourne and thats about it.
If we were ever going to play McGough yesterday was the day as McGough is at least good at one thing and that is centre clearances.
