Interesting decision, my reading is that basically he should face trial on the charges but can't go because he's a suicide risk.

^ Yep, that's it. Pretty cold comfort for anyone worried about the (substantial) implications of this case on journalism. Caitlin Johnstone put it pretty succinctly:

The message of the empire here was essentially "We totally coulda extradited you if we wanted, but you're too crazy," which sounds a lot like the international diplomacy equivalent of "I could kick your ass but you're not worth it."

One could forgive him for wanting to take a long break from Wikileaks and everything else, but I suspect that's the last thing he'd want to do.

Looking ahead, President López Obrador has tentatively offered Assange political asylum in Mexico, so at least it looks like he'll have some safe harbours once he gets the #@$% out of the UK (as he should at first opportunity, hopefully with family in tow).

Mexico a safe haven??

Even drug lords with their fortresses and die for them bodyguards are not safe , I’d suggest Mexico would be the last place he’d be safe. Black ops, CIA, yeah nah

Yeah, a little too close for comfort on the latter front, that's for sure. The place isn't all the wild west (I'm guessing Mexico City is a lot safer than the provinces, for instance), but I can imagine Mexico wouldn't exactly be his first choice.

Jake Sullivan, the US national security adviser, said the difference between China and the US is that China puts its critics in prison. I am not sure the British government is aware of how much international criticisms it is facing over this issue, or the damage it is doing to its soft power reputation. It’s a tool to whack the UK again and again. It is the perfect response for authoritarian leaders when they are criticised by the UK, or pressed to release political prisoners, ‘what about Julian Assange?’
