Coll v AFL Lions
I'm usually the first one to say we were shite, if that was the case, but I actually thought we did as much as one could expect last night.
You take out Lynch and Michael (and imagine we had Taz & Wakelin), for starters, and see how tables may have been turned somewhat. When you go into the game with a structure and plan, and your key forward and most experienced key backman go down before half time, its kinda hard agaist a team like Brisbane with Brown/Lynch/Pike and Michael/Leppa at either end. Your flankers become key position players and your pockets are picking up the 3rd talls. We were simply undermanned after half time and the Lions got on one of their rolls where they could do no wrong.
Of those 4 goals that gave the Lions the ascendancy, mentally and on the scoreboard before half time, one hit the post, one was a blatant free to johnson and one was a tin arse fluke/mistake. We've played better, of course, but we couldn't take a trick. Throw in 2 unf*ckinbelievable free goals to Brown and the result starts to look sick. We contested well, right to the end but by sheer weight of numbers and a team chockful of stars were overwhelmed. There were so soft efforts or examples of pulling out, I think all things being equal Brisbane are a 4-5 goal better side, not 10.
I don't deny we're in trouble - our lack of depth will always be exposed playing up at the Gabba in a game like this, who's wouldn't? I wouldn't write us off based on this performance though - don't forget Brisbane took some beatings last year when certain players were out.

Totally agree gunner. Some of those players have had since last years GF to earn some respect back after that shocking performance. But last night some of them proved to me that:
Being second to the ball is an easier option.
Watching instead of initiating the play was an easier option.
Being a follower not a leader was an easier option.
I saw a few players take side steps last night when the ball was in dispute.
I have seen that from the same players for the last two and three years years when the ball is in dispute and the game in dispute. What an easy gig to be a front runner when the team wins. When the team is losing I look for those players who hold there head high, who show that pride in their own performance and believe that it is as equally important as what the scoreboard shows. Winning or losing.
Lots of positives from tonight with the young kids. Question marks on our 2nd tier players have become crosses for me. We need to decide who will be leading us as our leadership group after Burns, Bucks, Lica, Wakes and Rocca is very brittle on our current playing list.
We can get alot out of this year, but we should focus on getting senior experience for our kids, not trying to persist in giving some players a sixth or seventh chance at trying to prove themselves when they have had 3-4 years to show us.
Go Pies! (Go anyone else who can beat Brisbane)

A great start by the team and we should have had a much bigger lead at quarter time. Obree get rid of ya girls headband as its obviously effected your kicking.
Wakelin was spanking Jonathon Brown until he received a cheap shot from the drug cheating dirty bastard in Lynch. When we lost Wakelin that through out our backline.
We also lost Tarrant for the game who is our linkman up forward and which meant Brisbane only really had Rocca to worry about and could play much more freely.
I was happy with Burns who had a huge first half, Swan did some very nice things and Lokan played one of his better games for the club. With a left foot like that he should be utilised more aroud the goals.
Jason Cloke obviously isnt rated that highly as Wakelin and Tazza were both off the ground for a lot of the game and he was still on the bench. I think he is very over rated by our supporters.
Lets hope Tazza recovers for the next game against Freo as without him our forward line is about as potent as a 88 year old without Viagra.
Last but not least what a PATHETIC first free kick to Alastair Lynch. The other two to Jonathon Brown were not much better along with the goal umpires two mistakes. However we better not criticise them or the AFL may suspend our registration on Nicks.

I have no idea where my match review went so I'll do another one here:
In the past 2 years grand final rematch, after a bright start, Collingwood meekly surrended to the might of the Brisbane Lions by 10 goals. The Pies started well with goals to Swan and Tarrant before the Lions hit back. The Magpies went into 1/4 time after Matthew Lokan goaled to put the Pies up by 4.
In the 1st half of the 2nd quarter, the match went much the same as in the 1st quarter with the Pies on top after goals to Lokan, Swan and Burns but the Lions stormed back to be in front at 1/2 time by 9 points.
In the premiership quarter, the Lions took control of the game. They had loose men every-whereas they pilled on 7 goals to our 3. Although Burns & Licuria got the ball often enough, the ball was almost always seen flying past them in a matter of seconds.
In the 4th quarter, Brisbane continued their dominance kicking another 6 goals with Lynch kicking his 7th for the game. Much soul searching is to be one if the Pies want to win on that one day in September. Come On Pies! Lets knock over the Freo shockers next week!
Player Review:
Shane Woewodin: 5/10 - Got enough of the ball but didn't use it well enough
Ryan Lonie: 2.5/10 - Got 10 touches and just didn't do enough for a 4th year player.
Alan Didak: 4.5/10 - Did some nice things but needs to get into the game more.
Nathan Buckley: 5.5/10 - Tryed really hard but just wasn't his night.
Brodie Holland: 5/10 - Played 'OK' for most of the night although did let Akermanis run loose.
James Clement: 4/10 - Quiet night down in defence.
Shane O'Bree: 3/10 - Got a bit of the ball but wasn't damaging.
Richard Cole: 0/10 - I didn't see him all night.
Shane Wakelin: 5/10 - Great in defence until he came off injured.
Bo Nixon: 0.5/10 - Hard to get a kick when your second games is against Brisbane.
Scott Burns: 8/10 - Our best all night. Again king of the clearances. 11 touches in the 1st quarter.
Paul Licuria: 5.5/10 - Got a bit of the ball but wasn't damaging.
Chris Tarrant: 2/10 - Terrific until he came off injured.
Guy Richards: 5/10 - Looked good all night. Tryed very hard.
Rhyce Shaw: 3/10 - Not much ground time. Did alright when he was on.
Anthony Rocca: 5/10 - Looked out of sorts all night although he managed to kick 3 goals.
Josh Fraser: 4/10 - Good in the ruck but quiet around the ground.
Ben Johnson: 6/10 - Never gave in and never stopped running.
Jason Cloke: 1.5/10 - Another shocker. Surely the next stop is Willi.
Simon Prestigiacomo: 3/10 - Battled hard against Lynch and throughly beaten.
Dane Swan: 6/10 - Looked good all night. Very good early.

One problem with the pies is that against Brisbane we lack the mental strength and skill to beat them. We had 3 chances in the first quarter to put us 30 points ahead and all ended up on the full. This is where the skill comes into it. Lica makes one mistake (be it that the Akermanis goal was a point) and we go from domination to capitulation. This is the mental strength. We have players like Shaw, Cole and Lonie that I believe are not up to to it, which leaves quite a few holes in our team. Fair enough, we had injuries and shocking umpiring go against us, but that is an excuse for a 4 goal loss, not a 10 goal loss. We seem to be lacking a spark this year which I hope comes back soon, or this could be a very difficult year for us.

No one should be suprised.
Brisbane have beat us 11 times out of the last 13.
They will go four this year and maybe five next year.
It hurts to make such comments but we have to be brutally honest.
When they are in full flight they are close to unstoppable.
Micks tough talk to the media is great but I would love it if it could start to rub off on the players at the moment.
Anybody that is suprised after last night should not be,we have not really won a game this year, last week against the bullies and I saw it live we did not win it they lost it.There is a big difference.
Take away the drugs take away the umpires and take away the salary cap Brisbane still would be the most formidable side in the AFL.
I love the pies but I also am a realist and those Lions are close to invincible.
Yes they will lose the odd game but they remind me of the Hawthorn of the eighties.
We have been a champion team we are not a team of champions. We have only one champion player in our team and that is Nathan Buckley. The rest are all very average.Brisbane are both. They have at least six champions and boy are they a team.
We have to recruit some ready mades like Nathan Brown and Nick Stevens. These are the players that I feel our staff should have gone after.
I in my heart sincerely hope that we can turn our form around.Mick needs to get tougher if he still can to do it.
On the positive side we were good for a half so I am sure that we will put away alot of the other sides this year.
Before some fire arrows at me think honestly with your heads about what I am saying,I have left my heart out of this post.

Terrific post! Particuarly this part :Miss_Lisey_Molloy wrote:We got rid and lost a few players last year and who did we recruit..... young kids, that's who! We have no players to stand up coz all our players are basically kids!
What are we gonna do when Buckley and Burns leave?????
I hate to say it, but our team is looking like Carlton's was last year. A bunch of young, inexperienced kids who cop a thrashing.
Our finals dreams this year are kapoot! We need to RECRUIT big time next year! And not just these young kids.....
Lynch should get 2 weeks at least! What a fkn dickhead! I hate him!!!!!! We lost the 2002 grand final coz we lost Cloke to the same stupid decision!!!!!!!!! If he was there, we would of won!
And that Jonathan Brown thinks he is top s**t. He basically waltzes around the ground and when he gets a mark or a kick he puffs out his chest like he is their god! What a wanker!!!!!
And what about that idiot Leppitsch! He is definately winning an oscar this year! He was barely touched, yet he threw his body like he'd been pushed and was granted a free kick! It was 10 times worse then that stupid ad for Origin Energy where that guy acts like Buckley ran into him and tripped him over, even though Bucks was like 5 metres away!!!!!!!
I'm so mad! I hate umpires! I hate Brisbane! I hate Lynch, Akermanis, Voss, Brown, and Leppitsch! I hate Leigh Matthews! I hate everything!
Congrats to O'Bree and Burns though, you guys played great. And also to Richards, Lokan and Swan who also played great.
Love always, Alyssa xoxo

That is very true. We have no depth after losing Betheras, Molloy, Richardson & Freeborn and we can't expect guys like Nixon to be world beaters 1st up.

Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse was left to rue three missed opportunities in the first quarter that had the potential to reshape the Magpies 60-point loss to triple-premiers Brisbane at the Gabba on Thursday night.

Well when you take away your best backman and best forward during a game most teams would struggle to win a game let alone beat Brisbane at the Gabba.
Take away Jonathon Brown or Lynch and Mal Michael and lets see how they would have gone. Losing Wakelin was a huge blow as he was thrashing Jonathon Brown.
When was the last time Rocca and Tarrant played a FULL game against Brisbane ??

I HATE BRISBANE!!!!!!!!
for the last 3 years i'll admit they have been the a very good side, but should'nt a very good side have humility?? and hey some people wrekon that when you have won the last 3 premierships you have a right to be arragont, up-themselves, drug cheating cockheads. But i disagree, when you have extra room in the salary cap of course youre not going to loose any players, but there is good news ahead...
Brisbane as good as they have been playing at the moment, will not last at this intensity for much longer, voss is drugged up to the eyeballs that i'm surprised that he hasn't into trouble like Laurence Angwin, the only way lynch could kick his 7 goals was by king hitting wakes (bastard), and if he doesnt get two weeks then the afl and the tribunal shold be lined up and shot (i agree with you james hird, Mclaren is disgraceful but hey so are the rest of the umires, including goal umpires - BLIND).
and if you call being a brilliant team, beating up opposistion players behind the ball, then open your eyes because the only way brisbane beat us last night was the fact that they punched and kicked iur boys while having the umpires eating out of their hands.
Overall burns and lokan were our best. lonie should not be played as a defender and cloke should not be played as a forward. hey maybe that loose man would have worked last night, at least it would have stopped lynch roaming around the forward 50 with no one helping a slightly underdone presti.
Shaw in my eyes has redeemed himself enough to warrant getting a go against the dockers, in the last half (when he was actually given some game time) he threw himself at the ball like i've never seen him do before, he could have gotten hurt but that didnt stop him, he didn't shit himself like he has done before, so ryhce shaw i take my hat of to you as you tried your best and got ri of those demons from the granny. but as for dick (ritchie cole) well not good at all. now dick is going to be a very good player down the track but his grandfinal performance is getting in his way, what happened to the guy who never took a backward step from physical contact, the guy who leaped over packs(even though he could never hang on to the marks) and ran through lines please come back cause we need you!!!
Anyway thats enough ranting for me but remember its only round 3 and there are 19 more rounds to go (and at least essenscum are below us!!)

Bullshit Brisbent goals, plain as day shockers.
#1 Lynch falling forward, hanging onto Presti. Imagine if Neitz, Richo, Tarrant or Barry Hall got one of these a year. They would have a all-night binge. 30m out.
#2 Brown grabbing Richards jumper, then getting underneath him. Barely touched. Whistle. 20m out.
#3 Johnson double coathangered, play on, voss to ?, running goal.
#4 Lonie kicks out 25m to Holland who marks. Called to play on for not being 15, Akermouthis smothers and then hits the post 173mm from the goal umpire's nose. Duly given the Brisbent two fingers.
#5 Brown falling backwards to mark, Presti barely touches his arm, 20m out
#6 Copeland nearly kicks out of bounds, duly given the Brisbent two fingers (that guy could umpire in india...LBW!) At least this one was reversed.
There were probably more.
Actually i heard that the REAL goal umpire was later found gagged and tied up in a cubicle. Apparently a member of the crowd and his mates thought it would be funny just to give Brisbane goals even if it was clearly a point, so they dressed their mate up and sent him out there pretending to be a first gamer...

Very sad year coming up.
That was our best chance as that was the weakest Lions team we could have come up against.
As I have stated before the Lions play a Rugby Union philospophy in the back line and midfield - very simple -
When the ball is loose the closest person attacks the ball and the outriders run about 5 metres apart towards the flow. The only exception is if the have the ball the run (still in a semi formation) towards their goal.
When the opposition has the ball they must attempt to do 2 things -
1. Take the ball carrier to the ground,
2. Hold the ball in or strip it loose.
The outriders then get the ball and as they are already at half pace or above they will immediatley have 5 - 10 metres on the flat footed ball watchers that all the other teams are - at the moment.
It is so basic that I cannot believe that the Pies have not worked it out.
All they have to do is watch the Brumbies or Waratahs play and how they handle the stoppages in attack and defense.
This is precisely why the Lions look fast on the break. In a straight sprinting footrace they probably would not win - but when they are constantly moving and one third to half pace and then they get the ball they can step up to near full pace in 4 strides. This always makes the traditional crouching ball watcher look very slow as it will take him 10 - 15 metres to get up to speed and the Lions outrider already has 10 metres start - the result no contest.
Look at Power in the 3rd quarter from the center - perfect example.
Dermie may have got it right on the TV when he said that the Pies Forward line model is very fragile if Taz or Pebbles or both get injured.
GR was great, Lokan execptional, Josh good, Dutchie good, Woey good.
Look closely at the 2nd quarter and Brown marks on the wing and Johnson could have taken the mark, spoiled or contested but he stopped and did nothing. I am tipping MM to drop him this week.
Can someone find out who the heck is the kicking skills coach at the Pies - Lica, Johnson and OB just to name a few should be doing remedial lessons.
Those 3 early kicks could have made a big difference - but to not score at all is sub standard.

Two things:
The Northern Army
I feel sorry for our brother and sister Collingwood fans in Queensland who have not seen a Magpie victory in their state since 1995.
And to have to put with Brisbane's bandwagon of supporters must be infuriating.
60 Point thrashing... Some other positives:
Along with some of the other positives already listed by other posters (e.g. Dane Swan, etc) I thought it was good we made a contest of it early on.
The last few games we have played against Brisbane we have been blown away early by a Brisbane 7-8 goal quarter. The game is practically over in the first quarter and despite the rest of the match being a contest, the final margin is suprisingly similar to the original first quarter margin.
We were in with a shot at half-time.
We also seem to have this pre-occupation with giving opposition teams a big lead before trying to chase them down in a blaze of glory.
Optimistic:
We are going to take some time to get our act together this season but so far I have seen improvement in each game we have played since our initial drubing at the hands of Richmond.
