Huge game and unfortunately one I can't see us winning. On paper Lions just look better and looking at the two teams form this pre-season we are a long way behind. Add to that the fact we're on their turf and it nearly seems impossible. However many of our best games in the last few years have come when we are the underdogs so I'm not completely writing us off just yet. The short break should favour us being the yonger side. Realistically I'll be happy with a competetive effort where we stand up to them for at least the first three quarters.
If we are to win this game there are several keys (in order of importance):
1. Accountability and intensity. The most important factors in our game that have rarely been spotted in 2004. When they are at their peak the run and goals will come.
2. Anthony Rocca. The only player on our list that the Lions have no real answer for. Should be able to play as a forward for three + quarters and really needs to boot at least 4. Taz also plays much better when he is on.
3. Rucking. With Keating out we have an opportunity to at least break even with hit-outs and when Fraser rucks he should be able to murder Charman around the ground. Richards will ideally want to ruck 40-60 minutes.
4. Backline stability. This basically means Presti lifting his game. Has had close to 20 shot on goal taken off him in just two matches and we look a bit shacky back there with him not on his game. Wakes, Johnno and Jimmy are all playing well. C1 could possibly be dropped.
5. Our midfield actually matches up reasonably well especially now that Burns has found touch in the middle again. They all know whats needed of them and the most important thing is the be accountable when the Lions streak forward. I think Voss will play predominantly as a forward (Clement to take him) so the midfields are more even than usual epsecially if they don't have their ussual ruck dominance. Lica and Holland will probably get jos and Lappin and Black respectively. Give Johnno the run on Aker no matter where he plays.
Our ideal side will line up something like this:
INS: Kinnear Swan
OUTS: Davidson (inj) Davis (inj)
B: Lonie Presti Cole
HB: Woey Wakes Clement
C: Didak Bucks
HF: Fraser Rocca O'Bree
F: Tarrant Swan
R: Richards Licuria Burns
* Holland wherever Black is
* Johnno wherever Aker is
I: Kinnear Lokan J.Cloke Nixon
E: C.Cloke McGough B.Shaw
O'Bree, Nixon and Cloke very lucky to stay in the side but I can't see Mick making more than the two enforced changes.

My team would be:
B: Johnson Prestigiacomo Cloke
HB: Cole Wakelin Clement
C: Woewodin Buckley Lonie
HF: Didak Rocca O'Bree
F: Burns Tarrant C.Cloke
R: Fraser Licuria Holland
Int: Richards Lokan Swan Nixon
In: C.Cloke, Swan
Out: Davidson (knee), Davis (finger)
Nixon possibly will be dropped because we are up against Brisbane, but i think he deserves another chance. I think C.Cloke could be ready to play senior footy and his inclusion would make our forward line very strong.

With the best will in the world, I am struggling to see us winning this one.
Brissie may be somewhat undermanned with a few absentees but frankly we would have to take a quantum leap forward from the performances of rounds 1 and 2 to pull this one off.
Brisbane for better or worse generally play as a cohesive team unit whereas we have been disjointed in most areas of the park; fielding a number of players down on form, confidence and composure.
I do acknowledge the positive signs of last weeks second half BUT Brisbane is at least another level above the Dogs, and we would require a requisite jump in performance to knock them over.
I certainly WANT to see it happen, but am less than confident of seeing it happen

Learnt my lesson
Just for a minute let's forget about the structural, form and logical reasons why we can't or probably won't beat Brisbane. 18 months ago I very, very reluctantly drove to Adelaide and went along to AAMI stadium to watch us play Port in the first week of the finals. I held no hope and actually didn't care if I didn't go along after watching us play dismally with no spirit against the Bulldogs in round 22. My girlfriend bought the tickets and had to talk me into it, which is completely not like me. I've been to around 500 games and have only missed one final since 1977 (Perth).
We were written off by the media and almost everyone including myself. I couldn't see how we would win. And how awful is it to be in Adelaide when you lose to Port and have to put up with those pathetic drunkards?
We sat down with the cheer squad and saw a few old mates who were loyal enough to be there. There was a large bunch of us sitting there. We were isolated and of course out numbered.
I am so glad the players didn't think like I did. They were incredible. Form meant nothing. Logic played no part. We were so fired up by the comments of Kane Cornes from months earlier. We were on a mission.
Now everyone, just maybe, after all the crap we received from everyone after our one, poor performance last September, this might be our mission!
It's bloody possible! Why not?
Good luck to everyone who is brave enough and loyal enough to go up there and support us if they can. Just like those same people who turned up to AAMI stadium that night 18 months ago,you might be about to see an awesome MAGPIE VICTORY. That night those Port children played our song afterwards at about 2 decibels. We all screamed our lungs out and singing was louder than I can ever remember. I gave those Port people heaps. It was about time. And it's time for us to give those Brisbane Lions what's coming.
Like I said I can think of logical 100 reasons why we can't win. But there's an even more powerful reason why we can win. Because we've been waiting for this moment for six months and thats our mission!!!!!

how about if we play sum1 like brodie on voss my reason is: we all know voss has a dodgy knee if we get our stongest player on voss and keep on going for his knee> ie. when eva ball goes near voss tackle him and sit on his knee and when it is int the pack on ground 1 pie player can just put force on his knee by holding him down. by the end or 3rd quater voss will be that sore he cant run really good. im of the belief if voss plays well so do the cheats so if we keep voss quiet we got a chance of winning as for aker just knock him out legally in 1st 10 mins and we got a chance.
MM has to leave J.cloke down back this game for the whole game and hopefully C.cloke will be in this week to ad height to our forward line

Collingwood is going to have to start the first half better then their last 2 efforts. Because if they give Brisbane a lead at Half time, they won't be able to chase it down. I hope the Magpies will win, but really on current form, I cannot see it, the Lions are in good form, and we aren't, unless there is a big form reversal by the Pies this week.
IN: Cameron Cloke, Mark McGough(?) Dane Swan (?)
Out: Davis, Davidson, Nixon

As long as we beat the absolute faeces out of Akermouthis and Brown and Johnson and Michael and Lynch and Voss and Hart and Pike and Lepbitch and Black and Lapping and Brennan and Hadley and Bradshaw and Charman and Scott and Scott and Notting (the Buckley Stopper - pa-leasssse....) and Caracella and any other bottom sniffing offspring that lines up for the AFL MutantSteroidCashCowBears everytime they get it i won't worry too much about a loss.
Get back on top.

Thanks for that. I think we are ready to take the next step. We must bring in McGough as he is a player who doesn't mind getting his hands dirty. We must be as tough and physical as we can. We'll suck them in if we are and they will loose sight of the job at hand.Nice post Johno, if this was rd 11/12 I would be drooling over the matchups you presented. After watching the past two efforts I don't think we're ready to take the next step just yet. This will be a physical game with very little skill as both sides throw everything at the contest. Bears bigger bodies will prevail as this is one area we cannot quite match them.
This game will be another step in MM's methodical build up this season. Personally I'm looking for the boys to stand their ground and find some form in the most intimidating environments in football.

Brisbane Lions coach Leigh Matthews remains committed to his two-ruckmen game plan, despite being left with an undermanned big-man division following the loss of Clark Keating for three to six weeks with a shoulder injury.........
......Matthews now says 50-gamer Charman will take over the primary ruck responsibilities, and also endorsed 10-game player McLaren as a capable replacement.......
.....Matthews indicated that, barring incident, Charman could expect to play "two-thirds" of the game against Collingwood.......
.....Brown, Matthews admitted, was "barely ready" after playing 45 minutes in the reserves on Sunday in his first match since a best-afield effort against Hawthorn in the Wizard Cup opener on February 22....
....Matthews was hopeful Darryl White, who damaged his knee in Adelaide on Saturday, also would come up unless a scan revealed damage more serious than anticipated. "It seems to be only fairly minor but five days is a very short turnaround," he said.

Heard on SEN that Shaw will be in this week, Rhyce that is. It was on the 2.00pm news with Mick saying that, do we shelter him or do we give it a go. I recon we will find out what type of player he is, because Brisbane will give him heaps, I would go as far to say that this is a carer game make or break.
BRING IT ON.
