Pre-Match: Collingwood V Salary Lions - Discussion in here

Post by Joel »

Well, well, well.....The Big Rematch.

It is time for atonement, it is time to make these guys the whipping boys of the competition, it's time to blow these drugged up Lions out of the water...CARN PIES!!!

Anyway, looks like a big match, I'm hoping we can win, but I'm certaintly not expecting us to.

Form Line:

Pies beat Dogs by 9 points at the MCG.
Lions beat Crows by 21 points as AAMI.

Who is in, and who is out?

Well, we have lost, Davis (injury), Davidson (injury), and apparently, Walker has inured himself, so he can't come up.

For Brisbane, apparently, J. Brown, Lynch, and Power are going to return.

I will post my team later in the week.

Thoughts?

Based on that, I dont think we have a chance to upset Brissy on home turf.

Brown, Lynch and Power are absolute champions who will only strenghten an already unbeaten line-up.

Sorry guys, dont want to be negative, but our form has been pretty scratchy too and we can only really hope for a competitive effort.

We were flying last year when we went up thier and Brisbane absolutely flogged us except for late goals in junk time.

Expect more of the same this time. The best we can hope for is no more injuries and more players to regain touch and form as we gradualy build momentum this season.

Brisbane by 4-6 goals.

When we went to the Gabba last year, we were competitve, then fell away, and then at the end, we kicked som junk time goals. We can beat them, but we have be on the ball.

I forgot to add that, they will be missing Keating, he injured his shoulder last week.

Keating will be a big loss for them, relying on Charman to play the whole game in the ruck. The only cop out for him would have been White, but reports are he may miss through injury too.

I get the feeling that this one might be ours. Brown will be a bit out of touch (hopefully but a little doubtful) Power might still be restricted and i really don't think Lynch will play.

If we win it will require our best footy, but it is possible going on the confidence we got from the last half last week and we have come out on the front foot this week in the media, so all well and good, Pies by 10pts.

Please, please, please Pies by 10pts !!!
Daicos....in 200 years time they'll still be wondering how he did it!

We are a real chance for victory. No Keating or McDonald will give us a huge chance. Just shut down Voss and they'll panic. Pies by 15 points. More detailed report to come.

Voss kicked 7 goals last week. He seems to be in form.

I don't like our chances with them adding three class premiership players to an already strong outfit.

Davis missing for us is irrelevant because he has had approx 3 possessions in 3-4 games v the cheats over the last 2 years. Not sure who they will bring in for him.

For us to win we have to be playing our best footy, which we showed glimpses of in the last 1/2 v Bulldogs, but we still should of kicked away against a shoddy team IMO.

All in all, I can't see us winning although it wouldn't surprise me if we did.

In my heart of hearts, I just cannot see the Pies winning this in our current form. The Lions will come out hard and will do their best to intimidate our players, physically and mentally. No doubt players will be targeted.
The Pies will need a good start with some quick goals on the board, they cannot let them jump us again. They need to play long direct footy, none of this chipping around the boundary line. EVERY player out there will need to give 100%. At the moment I shudder to think of the Cloke and Brown dual.
It will be a tough game, all I ask is for the boys to be competitive, fight it out to the very end and let them know they are not push overs and softies. THey also need to overcome the bandwagon crowd, so all those Pies supporters who will be there, be loud and proud!

Match Preview:

My Team for Round 3 Vs the Lions:

B: Clement, Prestigiacomo, Wakelin.
HB: Johnson, J.Cloke, Cole.
C: Woewodin, Buckley, Lonie.
HF: Didak, Rocca, O'Bree.
F: Holland, Fraser, Tarrant.
R: Richards, Licuria, Burns.
INTER: McGough, Lokan, C.Cloke, Swan.
EMERG: Leonard, R.Shaw, Mullins.

IN: McGough, C.Cloke, Swan.
OUT: Davidson, Davis, Nixon.

In the Grand Final rematch of the past 2 years, Collingwood could cause a boilover with a surprise victory over regining premiers the Brisbane Lions. The match could be full of spite and anger, as the Pies look to atone for their poor showing in last years grand final. With many of the Lions stars underdone, the Pies are set for a surprise victory. Here's how they can come out trumps.

Key Match ups: Defence:
Prestigiacomo vs Brown
Wakelin vs Bradshaw
Clement vs Voss (When forward)
Ben Johnson vs McRae (Or Akamanis when forward)
Cole vs Power
Cloke vs Notting.

It is a dounting task to face up to the might of Lions forward Jonothan Brown but Simon Prestigiacomo is up to the task. In previous contests, Presti has come out even or on top and will look for the same resault on Thursday. Wakelin should be able to keep Bradshaw out of the score book and Clement can take care of Voss when forward. Ben Johnson has the pace to keep up with Akermains or McRae and could sneek under the Lions guard for a goal or two. Luke Power should be taken care of by the ever improving Cole whilst Cloke can take Notting out of action.

Midfield Match ups:
Buckley vs B.Scott
Burns vs Pike
Licuria vs Voss
Woewodin vs Black
Lonie vs Lappin
Richards vs Charman

The battle of the midfields could decide the winner and loser of the Easter blockbuster. Names such as Buckley and Voss, Burns and Black, Licuria and Pike are household names in the AFL and all players will have the cameras on them as they go about their work. Brad Scott will most likely be assigned to Buckley, but will not be able to have the fitness to keep Buckley to under 25 touches. Burns should be able to keep Pike quiet whilst winning many possestions himself whilst Voss won't play all match in the middle, when he does move into the centre, Licuria should keep him quiet. On the wings, 2 of the 5 Brownlow medalists in the match, Woewodin and Black will battle it out whilst on the other wing, Lappin and Lonie will both play their attacking games as they charge towards their own goals. 2 young ruckman, Richards and Charman will do battle in an exciting contest between 2 of the competions most promicing young ruckmen.

Forward line Key Match ups:
Tarrant vs Leppich
Rocca vs Michael
Fraser vs White
Didak vs Hadley
O'Bree vs Shattock

Anthony Rocca will look to show the football world why he is so important to Collingwood by playing one of his best matches ever. 'Pebbles' is a big game performer and in a match which will be played under finals like intencity, there is no better time for him to unleash last yeasr September demons. He will be matched up on by big Mal Michael and the two former team-mates could decide how the match goes. Tarrant and Leppich will be another highlight, with both players coming off terrific seasons in 2003. The match up where Collingwodd could pinch the game is Fraser on Darrell White. With aging legs, White may not be able to keep up with Fraser and won't be tall enough to quell his influence. Didak and Hadley, both drafted in 2000 draft will look to nullify each other and Shattock will look to keep O'Bree quiet.
In what will be a tight and tough conest, I am tipping the Magpies for an upset victory. With no Clark Keating, the Lions look underdone ion teh ruck and the Pies tall forwards will be too potant for the Lions defence. Even without Leon Davis, the Pies should be able put the score on the board to shut up the diss-beleivers. Pies by 15 points.

Nice post Johno, if this was rd 11/12 I would be drooling over the matchups you presented. After watching the past two efforts I don't think we're ready to take the next step just yet. This will be a physical game with very little skill as both sides throw everything at the contest. Bears bigger bodies will prevail as this is one area we cannot quite match them.

This game will be another step in MM's methodical build up this season. Personally I'm looking for the boys to stand their ground and find some form in the most intimidating environments in football.

I would like to see Bo Nixon stay in and play at half forward. He should play a taggin role (like we've seen he IS capable of) on Johnson. Stop Johnson and we'll go a long way to winning this game.
My oxygen is Collingwood. Without it I die.

licuria on voss while he's in the middle - jimmy clement on him when up forward. brisbane have shown they struggle when he drifts out of the game, even if its only for 5-10 mins. based on last week, he may play less than a quarter in the middle and therefore, if we can restrict him to 2-3 goals and accept he will set up another couple for others, i think we can win. i firmly believe presti has brown's measure - he's only got on top of us when playing on clokey. lynch is doubtful and our midfield is good enough to go with theirs. reckon the game is up for grabs - few clubs put in poor efforts in the game following Hall of Fame nights... wouldnt be relying on that but doubt we will be anything short of 100% committed. winnable.

As if Leppa would last the whole game on Tazza. Tazza burns Leppa in the first 10 minutes before Leppa gets switched and plays as the loose man in defence. Leppa is crap.

The opponent of Leppa just needs to be accountable.

Still need to consider that Lynch will be available and Voss played most of his game at Aimless Stadium up front. Force these two to have to earn a kick instead of receiving and the tried old legs will start to burn by half time. Danger man though is Pike he has been left on his own too much against us. He was the difference for them in Round one !!

It is also entirely possible that we will own the centre bounce on Thursday if this turns out to be true and we can move the ball quickly into 50 we are more than half a chance.
Let all your troubles be forgot for we are Collingwood. We'll fight it out until the end we're Collingwood. So help me Jock.
Two pies and two beers thanks!!
