cranage
Can anybody tell me why Cranage can't crack a game in any AFL team and yet Andrew Williams and Walker are considered in Collingwood's best 22?

As mentioned in the topic heading, Williamstown finally broke their pre-season winless drought. A dour struggle all day as both teams broke even in positional play, but inaccuracy cost Coburg in the end.
The reserves also bagged the points (although there were none on offer), and on yesterdays form, seem ready to continue their domination of the past 2 years. They started slowly, kicking 4 behinds to Coburgs 2 goals before taking control. Accurate kicking kept Coburg in the game until just before half time.
However, it was not to be as Williamstown slammed on 17 second-half goals (11 in the last quarter) to 5.
Players of note:
Billy Morrison: Started slow (very slow in fact), but his first goal early seemed to be the confidence booster he needed. Took a huge grab just on quarter time, and after that, there was no looking back for the big fella. Often double teamed, his strength proved too great and took several marks under extreme pressure. Although I've got him down as kicking 5, he most likely kicked more as I had problems seeing the distance to the scoreboard end.
Brayden Shaw: Found space all day and topped his effort with three goals. Went off late in the last after a Coburg player charged into his knee and was having trouble putting his weight on his right leg. If fit, should replace cousin Heath in the senior side (more on Heath later).
Nick Maxwell: Again strong in defence, and has built up over the summer. Always on hand to help out in the push-and-shove, and seems to have taken an onfield leadership role. Should move up next week for the season opener against Werribee.
Brent Hall: Another huge body that competes well, but needs to read the play better. Often caught one step behind, but busts open packs with his size. Strong overhead but still behind in development due to a recent bout of glandular fever. Worth watching.
Julian Rowe: What a difference a couple of weeks make. Saw him a fortnight ago and his disposal left a lot to be desired. Yesterday, he was as good as the best of them. Played a midfield role and his endurance is his best asset. Racked up what seemed like a hundred touches as he was everywhere. Short passes, long kicks, handpasses - all hit their target. Capped the day with at least 2 goals.
David Fanning: A huge body with excellent jump timing. His professional basketball background gives him the edge in centre ruck contests, but needs to learn how to best use his size when it comes to body-on-body (ie, boundary throw-ins) contests. Excellent stamina for his size. Maybe the club could ask Barry Round to give him a few pointers.
With all the discussion re Pebbles' availability, I asked one of the water carriers (thanks Hayles) if Ant was playing. She came back at the start of the second quarter and confirmed he was. I didn't think to ask why Shack didn't play so can't give a reason for his non-appearance.
Players of note:
Guy Richards: Dominated early, but the bigger Coburg ruckmen started to take their toll as the game wore on. On the verge of AFL selection and just needs to bide his time as this year is make-or-break for him.
Anthony Rocca: Didn't take the high marks he is known to take as the ball was coming in shorter, but kept making himself an option. Kicked his first two goals from free kicks, one from a tackle, the other from a ruck infringement, but started holding his marks from the second quarter. Double teamed on occasions and proved too strong for the hack Dean Talbot.
Bo Nixon: Played on a wing, but I didn't see much of him. What I did see though, he has taking his first option which has made him look a better player. Ended the day with a couple of goals.
Tom Davidson: For someone compared to Taz, he struggled overhead. Tries to make the necessary adjustments mid-air, rather than on his approach to the ball. Can't see him making the step up at this early stage of the season. Not sure whether it is a confidence thing, but dropped a lot of contested marks that he should have taken. Always presented, and finished the day with three goals.
Mark McGough: Still taking the third option. What is surprising is that he looks at the first and second option, but mostly chooses the worst of three. Got plenty of the ball though and still needs work on his foot disposal. Gets in to trouble by holding the ball for too long, often forcing a quick, scrappy handpass.
Ben Kinnear: Saw him run out at the start of the game, and I think I saw him at CHB early in the first quarter, but that was it. Not sure what happened to him but only realised he did play once I started this summary.
Luke Mullins: Put a lot of Collingwood players on notice. Ready to debut at AFL level. Has bulked up over summer and has been used in the dominant midfield role (taken over from Fletch in the centre). Uses the ball well and takes the first option. Set up a lot of attacking moves.
David King: Almost back to his 2003 best, so could be looked at for AFL level. Strong in the clinches, but needs to play where he will be put under more pressure. His pace often gets him out of trouble, giving him time to weigh up his options.
Cameron Cloke: Not as dominant as this time last year, but sheer size makes the opposition take notice. Have seen him play better than he did yesterday. Not quite ready for the next level, but still plenty of time for him.
Dane Swan: Played more as a defensive defender (if you know what I mean) as opposd to Sam Cranage's attacking role. Drifted in and out of the game and did what he had to do.
Heath Shaw: Didn't do a lot, but what he did was only average. Hardly sighted from where I was sitting. Brayden would be the better option in his position, so hopefully Brayden's injury isn't too serious for him to line up in the senior team against Werribee next week.
Justin Crow: Played on Ryan O'Connor at full back, and kept Rhino quiet for most of the match. Took the ruck when the ball was deep in defense. Looks a much improved player as a key defender.
Match pics to follow.
