It was the 100th anniversary of the great Art Blakey's birth on Friday, so here's one of his most famous tunes, "Moanin'", composed by his pianist Bobby Timmons. This is a live performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKOoxgI_xfQ

And from the same concert, here's his masterful take on "A Night in Tunisia", starting with Art's amazing solo drumming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADWODreyby0 and, there's an even more jaw-dropping drum solo from about 5 minutes and 5 seconds in (but don't skip to it because you'll miss the ridiculously gifted Lee Morgan reeling off one of his magnificent trumpet solos).

Went to JB Hifi the other day to pick up some Cosmic Pyschos cd's, trying to duplicate some old vinyl, no luck, but picked up a recent release of 'The Pixies' Beneath the Eyrie. Good cd, will get right into it next week on a road trip to NSW South Coast.

Love the Psychos.
I talked my older girl into going and seeing them a few months ago at the POW.
She's been to plenty of "punk" gigs, loves the mosh pit and has even managed to scramble onto stage with Iggy. Walking into the door and seeing a bunch of balding, middle-aged men standing around, she thought to herself "this should be pretty tame". As soon as the first chord rang out it was chaos, with people flying everywhere. 10 minutes into the gig she got a doc martin to the head and had to be dragged, dazed and bruised, to the back by her friends.
Good times.

Fantastic album.

Here's something that you might also like (and may not know quite as well): Jukka Tolonen - who would have been a Certified Guitar God if only he hadn't been Finnish - filmed in '78: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCOqr7dTNqA

I'd like to post a link to "Witchdrum", which is my personal favourite of his, but it doesn't seem to be on youtube. So, here's "Hysterica", instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsdB02vxGSw

And here's "A passenger to Paramaribo": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rirLoIBLStc

Finally, here he is channelling Bert and John on a lovely acoustic piece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUULdxd4KBk

Great article on Flea's new autobiography. If you don't like the NYT's politics skip down to the arts/travel/culture/biographic articles:

Correct weight, that and the programme after. The Saturday pbs blues programme on Saturday is a ripper too. I’ve been a subscriber for years
