Look I agree, we were shit. Absolutely shit, apart from a few players (Grundy, Moore, Howe). But that Grundy push in the back cost us a goal and swung the game out of our reach. It was a game changer and the umpires's heads should <sip> roll for that.shawthing wrote:Don't blame the umps today. Geez we had about 4 players who turned up. This was a walkover to GWS.

Never mind that - there was a goal review - I think it was Pendles goal ruled as touched as it hit the arm of gws- the angle was all wrong on the review. I’m sure it was over the line when it was touched.Mr Miyagi wrote:All the media's talking about GWS being robbed by the goal review, "catastrophic failure of a diabolical system."
But no mention, none, zero, nada, nothing, of Grundy getting shoved clear in the back, no free, and Giants scoring a goal from it. <snip> flogs.

Let’s cut to the chase here. The umpiring was total crap. The Mayne goal was a goal at every angle of the screen I looked at. The Pendlebury goal was a goal as well. The umpire called it a goal and the ball was back in the centre so why was it reviewed? Then there was the Grundy push in the back that resulted in a goal. All the players stopped expecting the free to be paid so why wasn’t it paid? Then there was the throwing of the ball that wasn’t awarded when GWS was doing it but called every time the umpire thought we did it. I could go on and on. Pushs in the back that weren’t paid in front of our goal. All we needed was one of those to go our way and we win the game. Simple as that. Ok we were flat in the third term and threw it away but we made up almost 5 goals in the final term and deserved to win. Don’t know why some people here want to trash the team because we lost. We played our guts out and with an ounce of luck we would have won.

This exactly, and why I’ve had a gut full of the AFL. THey want to force support in the 2 states will never win, anddont give two shits about fans like me who have been to probably 80% of games in the last 12 years, and as a kid, probably that many plus Sundays at the commodore cup for another 10 years. It’s a farce. Areshole. Cheats, utter scum.MatthewBoydFanClub wrote:Let’s cut to the chase here. The umpiring was total crap. The Mayne goal was a goal at every angle of the screen I looked at. The golden rule re umpires is SIMPLE:
Never put yourself in a position where a few decisions against you will hurt. That is, be far enough in front that they can't take a game away from you. Obviously today we did not do ourselves any favour at all. We were ripe for the AFL picking. Shame on us, because we should understand the "rules" by now.

May i also remind you all that you were all mocking Essendon when they cried about the umpires less than a month ago......
Honestly guys, i dont know how you blame the umpires for our loss. Watch the replay and see how many times our players simply had the ball slip through their fingers. Until it dried out a little in the fourth, our skill level was deplorable. On the other hand, theirs was excellent n the wet conditions. i think that was the difference.
If you want to find another difference between the two teams, take a look at Cameron's and Finlayson's ability to dob goals from 50 meters out from any angle and then take a look at Ben Reid and Chris Mayne flub them from WELL inside 50 meters.
Finally, to anyone who thinks Thomas doesn't deserve a spot on the team, did you see how he manufactured goals for us in the last? He is a unique talent in that regard. A shame Brown doesn't share that ability. he had at least 4 chances but couldnt take the ball cleanly on any of the chances or simply kicked airy's

**** Essendon, shawthing above states it 199%, the only thing we did wrong was let the umpires dictate the finish. As for Brown, he’s a kid, and whoopee Thomas, doesn’t give anywhere near enough, it doesn’t feel any better this morning, and I have to wonder why I bother when clearly, this completion is do so far from a level playing field it’s not funny. We didn’t play well enough to beat 22 players, that’s the truth of it.

This is exactly my thinking, and I said it before the game, I used to say it to the kids I coached, you need a buffer so the mother of all umpire decisions doesn’t cost you the game.shawthing wrote:The golden rule re umpires is SIMPLE:

Friday night Danger took a massive dive, free kick 50 metre penalty, goal, Grundy gets a massive obvious shove in the back, crickets....and there isthe game.

While there's a lot of general pushes, holds, dropping the footy and kicking in dangers that could have gone our way I'l add 3 specific decisions/non-decisions that cost us goals. I don't expect the umps to be perfect, but generally the shit decisions end up roughly cancelling each other out, against the AFL giants apart from the Thomas touched goal every other shit decision seemed to go against us.
Mumford - taking his eyes off the footy to line up Roughead in the second quarter, clearly shepherding off the ball. Mark and goal to Cameron. Cameron would have marked it anyone, but that's not the point.
The giants player throwing his head back like he'd been shot after Noble pushed him in the chest. Blatant staging. Free kick down the field and a 50m penalty. Goal to the AFL giants.
Pies player on the front edge of the centre square looking to quick the footy into our 50. Giants player admittedly following an opponent runs into the Collingwood player with the footy as he was about to kick. Clearly delayed our forward entry, no 50m penalty.
