2019 VFL R1 vs Coburg (Sat 6th Apr,2pm @Piranha Park Coburg)

Post by barrackers »

Sadly MagpieBat has asked me to post this year's VFL threads in his place. There's no way I'm promising the impossible task of matching his lofty standards and I won't take offence should anyone wish to start #bringbackthebat in the same vane as #bringbacktheVFLreplay. That said I'll do my best to get the thread up early to ensure we maintain VFL discussion.

For those who don't know I get to most games and at times have provided goal comments on bigfooty. So, MagpieBat's efforts don't slip away, I'll most likely move those thoughts across here (or post on both sites). I may not get to all games though.

VFL - R1 | Coburg vs COLLINGWOOD

DATE: Saturday 6th April, 2019
FIRST BOUNCE: 2pm
WHERE: Piranha Park, Coburg (cnr Harding and Russell Streets)

CLUB INFO:

Fellow AFL-listers Ben Reid and Nathan Murphy are also expected to take their place in Collingwood’s side, as they recover from quad and calf injuries respectively.

Alex Woodward is set to captain the Pies for the first time in a competitive fixture. He will do so solo, as his co-captain Jack Hellier will miss with a knee injury he sustained in the pre-season. Hellier isn’t expected to feature during the first month of the year.

Sier likely to miss (rib) - https://twitter.com/CollingwoodFC/statu ... 1338222592

MY THOUGHTS:
It will certainly be a very different Coburg team this year with 23 list changes (https://coburgfc.com.au/player-movement/) none less significant than their captain and ruck brute Tom Goodwin who defects to Port Melb. Sadly for the lions they'll again be towards the bottom of the ladder, however they always seem to provide a good physical contest in past games against us.

For the 'pies I'm yet to see our full squad (I suspect it will be out tonight or tomorrow), however our confirmed departures are Kye Beveridge (St Bedes Mentone Tigers), Gus Borthwick, Marty Hore (Melbourne AFL), Tom Jok (Essendon AFL), Stephen Tahana (Sandringham), Nick Sing (Williamstown). Borthwick and Hore have been mainstays in the side in recent years and their loss will be felt, while Jok played well enough to get himself drafted.

If the Geelong practice match is any guide our VFL players look to be younger across the ground, which means at times we may miss the experienced bodies especially down back where we were already light on. It's a big if, but IF our AFL side can stay fit this will no doubt help offset this. Speaking of AFL injuries it's terrific to see that Broomhead is making his comeback this week with Reid and Murphy also set to play. Adams' return to the seniors should also see one drop back.

Coming from Niddrie, I'm thinking about doing the double this weekend.

Whats car parking like near the Coburg oval?

Haven't been to the ground myself, there looks to be 4 hour parking in Harding St, so I imagine the side streets are similar. Otherwise there's a few supermarkets just over Sydney Rd.

My best mate who passed away about 19 months ago was a mad Coburg fan and his father was a life member. If the Pies were not playing we often went over from leafy Malvern to Coburg to watch games. There were a couple of brothers who worked at CUB and always seemed to have a slab of export VB which we were welcome to sample as long as we bought them a pie each. Snr Sgt Saltmarsh was always on duty, had been there for years since he was Constable. Looked the other way most times as joints and stuff were lit up. Ken "Bear " Ingram was always up for a chat and a beer and Phil Cleary was good to stand near because he was as fervent a supporter as anyone. It lost its way when the Tigers then the the scum took over.
Annoying opposition supporters since 1967.

I would have assumed he's gone back to local footy, but there's no club next to his name on the Ins & Outs VFL page
https://vfl.com.au/2019-vfl-ins-and-outs/

Here's our full squad for 2019

I can't get pics to work here, but I posted an image of just our list (not the whole comp) over at bigfooty

In: Campbell Hustwaite, Sam Glover, Alex Spencer, Jackson Williams, Adrian Karatzas, Baxter Knight, Adam Oxley, Joel Madden, Patrick Marks, Nick Kempe, Mitch Cotter, Riet Pal, Nick Dodge

Good afternoon and welcome to Coburg. From the 27 named on Thursday Varcoe, Sier and Oxley don’t make the final 23.

As the first bounce is set occur I’m metres from greatness and the man who’ll lead our 2019 campaign. Wills starting in the goal square, with Reid and Goldsack also forward.

Nice grab lions, that’s the first two. We’re struggling to get it past the wing.
