I found this, written by Les Twentyman, in this week's Hobsons Bay Times:
Son of old Sticks! That's Williamstown 19-year-old giant ruck recruit David Fanning. The son of Seagulls 1976 VFA premiership ruckman John Fanning, David, who stands at 202cm, has been out of football for the past four years playing national basketball with clubs including Cairns Taipans. John Fanning, now 55, crossed from Essendon in 1970 after six AFL games. He played in the losing 1970 1st Division grand final and was playing-coach in 1978. He played more than 100 games with the Gulls winning the best and fairest award in 1974.
Sand, surf and sun, but with lots of hard yakka! That was the order of the day, according to Williamstown Football Club chief executice Brendan Curry during the Seagulls' three-day camp at Bancoora Life Saving Club, at Breamlea near Torquay. Fitness guru Brad Quinn put his charges through a 17-hour sand dune trek on Saturday. The squad of 40 players included Collingwood draft and rookie choices. "The players were dog tired after 17 hours workout and slept like babies," Curry said.
What the local papers say.
