Vic captaincy for Moss

Fox Sports

JONATHAN Moss can now claim he has been fully adopted by Victoria after he was today named as captain of the Bushrangers' cricket side to play Western Australia in Perth this week.

Moss will captain the ING Cup and Pura Cup sides against WA in place of Cameron White, who is on Australian A duty against India with batsman Brad Hodge.

Moss top-scored with 63 in Victoria's successful Pura Cup run-chase over New South Wales at the MCG today and will make his first-class captaincy debut just four years after he was a frustrated club cricketer in Sydney.

The 28-year-old left NSW without ever playing for the state team to chance his luck with Victoria and has not looked back, last summer named as the Bushrangers' Pura Cup player of the season.

"It's very surreal," he said.

"Last year winning the award and now to have the captaincy, I know how highly it's regarded in state cricket and it's just a magnificent thrill and I'll pinch myself for a long time to come." Brendan Joseland and Matthew Mott came into the Pura Cup side to replace White and Hodge, with bowler Mathew Inness not considered because of a mild bout of glandular fever.

Victorian team to play WA in the ING Cup on Thursday: Jonathan Moss (capt), Matthew Elliott, Shane Harwood, Ian Harvey, David Hussey, Nick Jewell, Brendan Joseland, Mick Lewis, Andrew McDonald, Graeme Rummans, Peter Roach, Allan Wise (12th man to be named).

Test stars pad up against Vics

By Michael Horan - Fox Sports

STAND-IN Victorian captain Jonathan Moss received no favours yesterday, with Test stars Justin Langer, Adam Gilchrist and Damien Martyn all playing for Western Australia in today's day-night ING Cup clash at the WACA Ground.

Despite coming off the shock loss to India in Adelaide and having back-to-back Tests coming up in Melbourne and Sydney from Boxing Day, the trio has been cleared to play by national selectors.

However, fast bowler Brad Williams has been ordered to rest his injured shoulder.

The return of the Warriors' top-shelf players compensates for the absence of their two heaviest run-scorers this season, Mike Hussey and Chris Rogers, who are in Hobart with the Australia A team for the three-day clash against India starting tomorrow.

"That's all right. They've been beaten over here with all of them in the side," Victoria's assistant coach and former WA batsman Greg Shipperd said.

"I coached a couple of Tassie sides that came over and did the job; there is no reason we can't do it as well."

WA, on top of the one-day table with 14 points from four games, hosts a Victorian side ravaged by injury and absentees.

Captain Cameron White and Brad Hodge, who has smashed two centuries and an unbeaten 50 to be averaging 101.66 in this competition, are also in Hobart with Australia A, opening bowler Mathew Inness has glandular fever and veteran wicketkeeper Darren Berry is out with a broken finger.

It was expected Gilchrist would be rested because of his international workload, but he said yesterday he was 100 per cent committed and would probably don the gloves as well.

"I'd say I'd be keeping if I'm there, but I have to talk about it with (coach) Wayne Clark and Justin," Gilchrist said.

It seems certain Langer, Gilchrist and Martyn will all miss the Pura Cup game that starts here against Victoria on Saturday.

Ian Harvey, who didn't bowl in the second innings against New South Wales this week, has been cleared to play for Victoria.

Yesterday the WACA Ground pitch had a greenish tinge and, with hot, sultry weather prevailing, seam bowling is likely to be a major factor.

Good win out for 39 to Wise who finished his 10 over spell on 1/54. Going for 2 sixes didn't help his figures.

As Langer approaches a century, W.A. is 5/169.

On 99, Alfie steals a single for his ton.

North's 84 n.o. from 62 balls helped W.A. to a total of 5/270.
