Tigers roll Blues in upset
November 15, 2003

TASMANIA downed NSW by six wickets today to secure an upset win in the Pura Cup cricket match at Bellerive Oval.

The Tigers finished on 4-386 after chasing down the required runs in 106.5 overs, with enterprising left-hander Michael Di Venuto unbeaten on 174.

Di Venuto's partnership with supportive skipper Dan Marsh yielded an unbroken 220-runs, with 200 brought up off 276 balls in just over three hours.

Marsh was unbeaten on 107.

The Blues had the upper hand as the Tigers resumed their second innings on 1-26, needing 360 for victory off 96 overs.

The loss of veteran opener Jamie Cox seven minutes into the final day's play was a huge blow as the chase began in earnest.

Despatched for a duck on day two, Cox fell LBW to leg-spinner Stuart MacGill for 18.

But Di Venuto proved to be inspirational for the Tigers, who finished last season with the wooden spoon, against the Pura Cup champions.

His third-wicket partnership with allrounder Shane Watson (42) delivered 103 much-needed runs.

Di Venuto was awarded man-of-the-match for his efforts.

Imagine that, Tassie winning, maybe I should bag them more often, if this is what's going to happen ;)
