Leppitsch also criticised the AFL for playing a role in the club's predicament, saying the League had favoured the expansion clubs ahead of the Lions.

C'mon it's really hard to build a competitive team if your entire starting midfield isn't comprised of Brownlow Medallists. I have some sympathy. The rot started when Murphy declined to join as a F/S selection, so that he could go to a club where he would win many premierships.
I will never be a subscriber to this. They came last in 1998, two years after playing in a PF and won the premiership three years after collecting the wooden spoon, as we also very nearly did.

While he has a point about GWS, Leppitsch needs to learn that there's more to building a club than hand outs, yeah that's how they gained success first time around, but such gifts don't last forever.
They certainly don't win in '02 without 600k more in the cap, so it's nice that's karma is coming around.
I have no idea why he's bitching about concessions, as the Lions were given years of them and then they were waned off of them like GWS and Gold Coast are going to be. It was up to the Lions to stand on their own two feet, and not rely on concessions forever.
GWS and Gold Coast were new clubs, Brisbane Lions had their own players and then had the best of Fitzroy then had concessions galore to build it. Both GWS and Gold Coast had nothing they had to find their own players and all.
The Lions have made their own bed here, they have allowed Voss scapegoat coaches when he was in charge of the review. They then went and employed another former player that wasn't ready to build a list.
Lions may need a priority pick, but they need to fix their own mess, the AFL can come along and give them money to survive but they need to figure out how to fix their list themselves.
There are other teams in the shit atm, and they have to fix their own lists so should the Lions.

Thus, Sth. Melbourne became Sydney Swans and Fitzroy, Brisbane Bears.
All we need, now, is for the AFL to relocate Carlton, Essendon, Footscray, Hawthorn, Melbourne, North, Richmond and St Kilda and everything will be fine with me. If there aren't enough places to relocate them, a few (like, say, Carlton) could just be disbanded.
