Copa America 2016

Post by Pies4shaw »

The Copa is down to the quarter final stage. All the remaining games are being broadcast live on SBS. Brazil has been knocked out and Dunga has been sacked (for, I think, the second time).

Yesterday, the US 2 beat Ecuador 1.

This morning at 9.30 AEST Peru play Colombia.

On Sunday morning from 8.30am, Argentina play Venezuela and Mexico play Chile.

Messi (the actual best player in the world) is warming up. Argentina v Venezuela kicks off in a few minutes. Live on SBS FTA, if anyone wants to follow it.

And we're underway! World rankings: Argentina 1, Venezuela 77. Messi is starting on the pitch for the first time in the competition. What a star-studded line-up - how can they have so much talent that De Maria is on the bench?

Venezuela doing their best to cripple Lionel. Not succeeding, so far and Messi puts in a brilliant ball for Higuain. 1-0.

And Messi is hacked down in the penalty box but, bizarrely, no penalty is given. Tackled from behind and the defender got none of the ball and quite a lot of Lionel. The Barcelona football department must be hoping Lionel will come back with legs for next season.

I suppose Venezuela's style would be described as a typical "willing" South American defence.

And just as Venezuela looked to be applying a bit of pressure on the Argentinian goal, a defensive howler of a backpass puts Higuain in one-on-one against the keeper. 2:0. Normally, that's the most dangerous of leads but here you get the feeling that it is just a pit stop on the way to 4:0.

Venezuela hit the post with a header! They're working their way into this. And a magnificent save denies them again, moments later. And then Venezuela are denied a penalty!

And now they have one! The keeper takes out the attacker's legs in the box. But the penalty is fluffed. Still 2:0.

And that's the halftime score. Seijas had better watch his back in the rooms during the break - his may have been the most inept attempt to chip a goalkeeper with a penalty in the history of the universe.

No changes as they start the second half. Argentina need to stiffen that defensive spine.

And there's another yellow card - this time for breaking Messi's other leg.

Substitution for Venezuela. Seijas off (and probably heading for a private charter-flight). Messi is still able to stand, more or less unassisted, so they probably feel they need to bring on someone who is serious about marking him.
