Injuries hit both camps for Indian trans-Tasman match
Lynn McConnell - October 29, 2003

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Australia's match with New Zealand in India today is rapidly shaping as a "best of the rest" match, so badly hit by injuries have the two sides been. The latest withdrawals from the game are Mike Kasprowicz, the replacement Australian fast bowler, and Chris Cairns, the New Zealand allrounder.

Cairns, who suffered a hamstring strain in New Zealand's last match, the rain-affected encounter with India, failed a fitness test yesterday and will be left to recover for New Zealand's next game, against India in Pune on Monday. Kasprowicz has a sprained hip muscle according to Australian captain Ricky Ponting.

Australia had already lost Brett Lee, Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie and Darren Lehmann from their World Cup-winning side, with Shane Warne still unavailable due to his suspension. New Zealand went on tour without Shane Bond, and have sent Nathan Astle home for treatment for his recovering knee, while Cairns is now unfit.

Just what is it that happens to captains when they come up against Australia. Talk about mental disintergration.

In recent Test series, we've seen Fleming, Hussain, Lara and Streak winning the toss in the first Test of a series and inviting Australia to bat. Each time the Aussies scored a mountain of runs.

This morning, before the match, Fleming said he'd bowl if he won the toss because there looked to be some moisture in the wicket.

He won the toss and BATTED. The first 5 batsmen scored 0,2,0,7 and 0. Beats me.

Hayden and Ponting must have had a big lunch.

It's steady as she goes at 1/64 after 12 overs with Hayden on 27 n.o.
