Jobe Watson

Post by Presti35 »

Whats happening re:The Brownlow?

I thought the decision was going to be made in Feb? Then March?

Just seems decisions have been pushed back and pushed back and pushed back ever since this WADA-ASADA thing came out.

Does anyone know when we can expect the news is he's keeping it or not?

This article from The Age published on March 21 pretty much sums up what's happening with the situation of the Brownlow Medal and whether Jobe Watson is able to keep it or not. The excerpt below from the article is the most relevant part of your question.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/a ... no32b.html
Following the January 12 ruling in which the Essendon 34 were rubbed out for the 2016 season for their involvement in the club's controversial supplement program, AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said Watson would have the opportunity to plead his case to hang onto the 2012 Brownlow at a February commission meeting.

But a decision on that will be delayed given the suspended Bombers are appealing their bans at the Swiss Federal Tribunal.

Cheers Jezz. Guess we'll have to wait a while longer, when the Swiss appeal result is known.

I saw a framed Jobe Watson Brownlow Medal poster in the post office the other day. And I thought now there's a conversation piece someone could stick on their wall.

Trent Cotchin and Sam Mitchell finished equal second with 26 votes.

It's a mess. You'd have to take away all the points given to banned players.

So do the umps go back and re-award votes to eligible players?

Do all Essendon votes get rubbed out and then recounted. This would be a horrible mess, (An example is a player who got a 1, would now be given a 3 if the players who were given 2 and 3 were banned players).

Do they simply asterix the banned players as if they were suspended during the year? (This one probably makes the most sense).

This could still create some controversy, as Trent Cotchin, Sam Mitchell, Scott Thompson, Dane Swan, Gary Ablett & Patrick Dangerfield could have finished higher or lower, depending on the votes given in Essendon games. (Swan did receive the total 6 votes against Essendon that year, so theres no chance he could finish higher in the award, but an equal second is not bad).

That would be the simplest and most efficient way of determining the new winner(s) if Watson is stripped of the award.

However, thinking about the other potential ramifications of redoing the votes all over again involving Essendon matches, it could become very messy especially since it happened 4 years ago, so I doubt the AFL would choose that path to determine the new winner.

Winning a retrospective Brownlow would probably take some off the heat of Cotchin. It'd also stop people from moaning about how underrated Sam Mitchell is. Not that I care either way. But Watson definitely has to be stripped. He's been found guilty of taking a banned substance for FFS. It's a no brainer.

If the last-ditch appeal against the Essendon doping suspensions fails, then the commission will decide whether Watson keeps the medal.

That is on hold until the appeal verdict is handed down in Switzerland, most likely later this year.

Essendon chairman Lindsay Tanner again said on Anzac Day that the Bombers think Watson should keep the Brownlow.

If the appeal fails, it would be outrageous if Watson was able to keep his Brownlow.

No decision will be made until we know the outcome of the Switzerland appeal..... 'Later this year' probably means December.
