Can't see how anyone can have sympathy for them thensixpoints wrote:The Transcript is damming of the players. It cites that they were all present for the ASADA Briefing on drugs in sport regulations in 2012 and signed their agreements. It was cited they were educated on how the onus is on players to know what is in their systems and that if anything banned is found it they the players who will be punished.
They were told that if you are unsure of any substance you have taken you MUST report it. No player did.
They were told to use the ASADA hotline if concerned or to even make inquiries. No player used it.
It also cites that on 30 different occasions in 2012 ASADA sent random drug chekers to Essendon players and that on every occasion, as part of the procedure, they were asked if they had been taking any supplements. On 30 occasions the players stated 'no'.
Essendon players guilty! Bans til November 2016!

I think the ruling will actually help them. Firstly, they were never going to win the premiership this year, probably were not going to play finals. They'd finish middle of the road and get pick 8 or 9 in the draft. Now, they'll finish last (probably) and still not play finals or challenge for the premiership, BUT they'll get top draft picks AND maybe a compo pick. This is on top of their early pick last year and their traded pick for Carsile. They have a few older players who wont be there when they next challenge, now not only are they not taking a young kids spot in the team BUT they can be "traded" after 2016 for a draft pick (likely less than value but still better than nothing) as a fresh start for everyone - I'm thinking Watson (aged 30 now), Hocking (28) and Stanton (29), maybe even Hooker (27) depending on how bad they actually drop and who they draft. That would be a few second round draft picks on top of their likely number one pick and first pick in the second round - great position to rebuild in.
The players can't be paid during this season (while they're banned) - so the club will actually save money on that front. They will likely be sued by the players so this will counter act that but it will help pay the legal bills.
Also, now everything is cleared. Hird is gone, the players will serve their sanction and it'll be all over. Legal battles will likely be settled early or resolved and the club can get on with life, and with a few players coming to them early in the draft and the associated hype around them it could propel the team to their next grand final, something Watson, Stanton and Goddard are unlikely to do even in the best circumstances!

Are you sure about this? If so, then we should be able to recruit 2 VFL players to cover Keefe and Thomas.Member 7167 wrote:The AFL has already given the Essendopers permission to recruit players from the VFL competition. I do not know to what extent and if it means they can approach players contracted to other VFL/AFL teams.AnthonyC wrote:As much as this is "justice', what does it mean for the competition is the question I'm asking. How the hell does essendon field a team? Will the AFL make new rules for this year? So many repercussions that will occur.
