Australia v. Zimbabwe - First Test.

McGrath out, call-up for Williams
October 5, 2003

SENIOR Australian pace bowler Glenn McGrath was today ruled out of the first cricket Test against Zimbabwe in Perth starting on Thursday.

West Australian paceman Brad Williams will come into the 12-man squad and could make his Test debut in front of his home crowd after it was decided not to take any risks with McGrath who underwent ankle surgery in August.

A team spokesman said McGrath would fly home to Sydney immediately.

McGrath bowled in the nets yesterday but pulled up sore and said then he was not happy with his progress.

He said then he would not play unless he was close to 100 per cent fit. McGrath also indicated he was prepared to sacrifice the first half of the domestic summer to ensure his fitness for a gruelling schedule over the next 18 months.

"For a fast bowler, when you've got ankle problems with your front foot, it can be a major problem," McGrath said.

Once again, an opposition captain wins the toss in the first Test and sends the best batting team in to bat.

Yes, it is Perth but what message does it send to your top order batsmen ??

It's funny that it takes Hayden about 5 overs to go from 95 to 100 but then the next 5 overs he scores about 50!
