Yes very sad. RIP.

His son was the back-seat passenger in the car.

Tragic.

Further investigations reveal the car to be stolen. The car contained two 17 year olds (one driving) and Rattan's son age 16 in the back seat. It rolled at speed at 3.00am on a foggy winding road at Yarra Glen. No other cars appear to be involved.
Call it for what it is - culpable driving. This is verging on manslaughter.

I feel sorry for the Ratten family and for Brett who by all accounts is a quality person.

His son.

Meh.

At least these fools didn't plough their speeding stolen car into anyone else.

Just saw the summary on the news.

The driver was a 17 yr old unaccompanied L plater who allegedly has admitted drinking alcohol and taking ice. The Rattan kid was in the back not wearing a seat belt, he's the only one of the 3 dead.

I don't know anything about the Rattan kid, but a 16 year old just made some really bad decisions and will never get the chance to learn from them.

A 17 year old kid also seems to have made some really bad decisions. If he was 18 he may well be charged with culpable driving, remains to be seen how that plays out but he may just have $@&^# his life irrevocably at 17.
Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down.

Stolen car
Speed
Alcohol
Ice
Marijuana
No seat belt

Not really a shame, more of an inevitability.

Thankfully they didn't plow head first into a truly innocent driver of another car.

Terrible, terrible shame. The fact that the young 16 year old who had his life in front of him has had his life taken away in that instant is shocking.Having lost a family member in a traffic accident, I can only say to Ratts that it gets easier over time, but you never forget. I hate Carlton, but football means nothing at all at times like this. Goodwill to Brett Ratten and his family
I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

I share the same sentiments as well Swoop no matter how cold or apathetic it may come across.

I do feel for Brett Ratten but his son by all accounts was far from an angel.

Teenage wasteland.

Really sorry for Brett and his Family, sincerely.

The loss of someone due to age and illness, you can accept (after a while). The loss of someone through stupidity and no brains is so much worse.

Sad day for the Ratten family I agree.
For them this is the beginning of a life sentence of pain & heartbreak.

It's over with Cooper now that he's gone but his loved ones left behind are the ones who will be picking up the pieces & will suffer for the rest of their lives.

Just a terrible shame & a waste.
