Soccer still Behind AFL and NRL

For people who think that last nights winning of the Asian Cup means that soccer is the number 1 sport in Australia. Keep on Dreaming.

Soccer is a Strong Sport now in Australia. Compared to what it was pre-2005 but still easily behind the AFL and NRL.

Though A-League is the Biggest League in the Summer.

Also AFL and NRL are so intrenched in the Aussie Culture

The A-League grows every year in quality and viewership but there are some teams that are still currently struggling. The AFL's battling in Western Sydney will see the Giants lose to the Wanderers as that part of Sydney has always been more soccer than anything.

A-League and that code of football may never be number one in Australia, but it has a strong chance of overtaking NRL, though if the AFL keeps treating the fans badly who knows where some of those fans may go.

I have grown up entrenched in Aussie Rules but I also like Soccer. Aussie Rules will always be No 1 for me however Soccer is making giant strides which will only increase with time. It is only extreme mismanagement and in fighting which has held it back thus far but it is now tapping into a huge latent group of people who are not that interested in Footy.
The AFL will need to make all the right moves and keep on the ball to remain the dominant spectator sport in OZ in the long term.

^ indeed dave, given the a league is played in our off season with
little overlap. i used to think i'd rather have my eyes poked out than watch a game of soccer but, of late, i am really warming to the game. i went to three of the melbourne based games because we don't get much international soccer. they were all a terrific experience.

I have same sentiments as J W. Dont forget the soccer takes over the MCG in the middle of the 2015 AFL season for the first time in its long history ( im guessing it hasnt happened before )
In the past, even when the AFL did give soccer the odd free hit, the round ball code couldnt take advantage of the opportunity. Not any more, if the AFL dont get it right quickly, the round ball code is now in much better shape to make further inroads. Mightnt be a bad thing if it means reigning in the arrogance of the AFL for the next few years and bringing aussie rules back to the people.
BTW - 90,000 tickets sold out in a couple hours for the manchester vs real madrid game at around $200 each for an average seat for an adult.
