Who says we need a tallish utility with foot skills? Is this a Lumumba replacement or eventual successor to Goldsack we are after?
Are you just describing Laverde and telling yourself that's what we need?
I think our most glaring deficiency is addressed by Pickett. Not only do we not have one of his type in our best 22, we don't even have one in development.
I'm not worried about his comment regarding the go home factor. He said he'd ENJOY being drafted by an interstate club and that he'd want to play at home at some stage. That doesn't imply to me that he's going to demand a trade to West Coast at the end of next season.
More likely, he'll take a superannuation package at WC or Freo after he's won four premierships with us. I'll back our club and our culture to retain a player we want to keep. Beams is the rare exception, not the rule.
If we don't get Pickett at 5, because Hine is delusional enough to think he knows what is best for the team better than I do just because he has a shitload of relevant information available to him that I don't, and is more experienced and more astute, then I hope we get Garlett at 30.
We need a crumb hunter and without getting too heavily into racial profiling, the traditional owners of our land have an irrefutable inclination towards it. Tom's brother Ed could be an option too, if we pass up Pickett at 5 and miss Garlett at 30 then I hope we get Langdon at 48.
Short of that we are going to be using Kennedy's and Freeman's and Broomhead's in the forward pocket and while that's all nice and fine, and a good way for Freeman to get involved early, I think we'll be a better team once we've installed a specialist.
P.S. Defender - there's a shitload of tall utility types available around the 30 mark, well that's what the projections are suggesting anyway.
Viojo Rainbow at 185cm and 80kg, an accurate cannon of a left foot, considered a counter-attacking defender but they never end up being what they are drafted as, do they?

Laverde, McKenzie, Langdon
Or
Wright, Iced Vovo-Rainbow, Langdon
If we get any of those combo's I'll be pleased as a pig in shit.
Discounting Pickett, Cockatoo and Garlett, because I don't think they're top 5 on talent, and unfortunately will all be gone by 30 imo (as much as I'd love one of them to still be there)

Is Ahern top 5? Sounds like quite a skilled player. We desperately need a good long strong accurate kick.
We have runners but not reliable kicks: Crisp, Marsh & Freeman are not known for their kicking skills. Add to that: Sinclair, Toovey, Frost & Greenwood then there is an obvious deficit.
We have gained Varcoe as the only accurate & reliable kick so far.
In my mind the deficit is obvious. Ahern could fill that role but I don't know enough about him.
Whoever we get has to be a great not just good disposer of the footy.

I found this link on Laverde. It suggests that he has all the attributes to be a superb footballer and while his kicking skills are good, they're not considered elite. In reality, very few footballers have elite kicking skills but they have great attributes in other areas which Laverde clearly has.RudeBoy wrote:Laverde is a beautiful kick.watt price tully wrote:Is Ahern top 5? I think we're set on him and now it's just a case of whether Hine thinks the same way.
