RIP Robbie Flower

Post by John Wren »

it was reported earlier in the evening that flower had passed away but the family had not been notified. this has now been confirmed and the family has released a statement.

for many of us we grew up watching melbourne struggle through the 70s and 80s. an enduring memory of those games was watching robbie flower grace the wings of the mcg. i somehow went to many melbourne games during that time. he was an absolute favourite to watch especially when you'd see flower and barham tear up the wings.

rip robbie flower. condolences to your family.

please, i urge you to not let this thread turn into the usual nick's shitfight.

That's so sad & so unexpected. Early unconfirmed info is as a result of a heart attack aged only 59.

One of the very best players I have ever seen. As hard as nails, full of courage but a free flowing and at times graceful wingman. A string bean of a bloke, but he never shirked an issue. He was Melbourne's best player for an entire decade.
He had it all, except real team success. He battled away in a poor team for his entire career until he finally got to the finals in his last year - 1987.

Shattering news.

This man was one of my early non-Collingwood football heroes. Brave, skillful and always scrupulously fair. One of the best footballers during the 70's-80's golden era of football and was clearly a humble, nice bloke.

We all put a bit of crap on Melbourne but seriously they've been beset by tragedy like no other club in the past decade (Troy Broadbridge, Sean Wight, Jimmy Stynes, Dean Bailey and the Neale Daniher diagnosis) and I feel massive sympathy for them.

RIP Robbie and sympathy for his family and all Demon fans.

Terrible news. RIP Robbie Flower.

Was in my form 6 English class at High School but a coupla years older.

Nice guy even then. Magnificent footballer.

Dying so young. Terribly sad.

A dead-set champion of the game; imagine if he played for a decent team? Could of snagged a couple of flags with Robbie adding some silk
