Players who don't get a VFL gig are released back to their club in the minor leagues.

^ Thanks guys. As I said, I just wonder how selection works in the local leagues (presuming this system is followed by the other VFL teams). The VFL line-up is dependent on the AFL line-up, which can be changed at the last minute, so you must have plenty of situations in which the local teams lose their star players on the morning of the match or later. Must be kind of annoying!

David, there was an article on Tom Sundberg in 2011 in the VFL Record that brushed on this. I had the record around here somewhere, but I've gone and misplaced it.

Anyway, Tom explained in that article that he always packs two bags on a Thursday night. One bag contains his Collingwood VFL kit, the other bag his local team kit. He gets selected by both his local team and our VFL team when selections are announced in both competitions on a Thursday evening, then he waits to get confirmation of who he'll be playing for right up until 90 minutes before a game, then jumps in the car and dashes off to wherever he is playing. In 2011, it was almost always with the VFL team.

I hope that helps shed some light on the matter...
